Europe’s water sector is calling for regulatory stability.

With droughts, floods and pollution on the rise, now is not the time to reopen core water legislation.

We urge the Commission to focus on implementing the WFD, UWWTD and IED to strengthen water resilience and protect public health. 💧

EurEau, Copa-Cogeca, and IFOAM Organics Europe have co-signed a letter to the President of the European Commission urging the EU to uphold the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme in the recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (rUWWTD).

The rUWWTD, in force since 1 January 2025, strengthens Europe’s water resilience by removing micropollutants from wastewater. The EPR scheme ensures that pharmaceuticals and cosmetics producers cover most of the costs - protecting farmers, households, and the food sector from higher wastewater tariffs.

Weakening the EPR could mean 15–50% higher costs in some areas, affecting food prices and competitiveness.

We call on the Commission to maintain the EPR in full, a fair, polluter-pays approach that safeguards water quality and supports sustainable, resilient food systems.

As a key element of the European Water Resilience Strategy, the Academy will build the knowledge, skills, and expertise to ensure a water-resilient continent. It will offer advanced training, support innovation and improve collaboration between public and private sectors.

Bringing together scientists, water sector experts, academic institutions and key industries, the EUWA is structured as a network of networks, united by three core principles:

1. Lab-to-Fab Principle: Developing scalable, market-ready solutions to address water challenges.
2. Living Labs Principle: Using real-world sites for testing and training.
3. Hands-on Training: Providing local-language courses, customer discovery, and public engagement to ensure broad acceptance and adoption.
