💶 Europe's water infrastructure doesn't maintain itself.

Every year, Europe's water operators invest €52.5 billion to keep drinking water safe and wastewater services protecting our environment.

Some key findings from EurEau's Europe's Water in Figures 2026 report:

💧 €52.5 billion invested annually in water infrastructure.

🏗️ That's around €101 per person every year.

🏠 Households spend only around 1% of their income on water services.

📈 Investment has increased since the last report, but not enough to keep pace with inflation or future infrastructure needs.

🔧 Infrastructure renewal is now the number one challenge identified by Europe's water sector.

Reliable water services don't happen by chance. They depend on long-term investment, stable financing and recognising water infrastructure as one of Europe's most valuable public assets.

♻️ What happens after you flush the toilet?

Across Europe, wastewater services quietly protect public health and the environment every single day.

Some key facts from EurEau's Europe's Water in Figures 2026 report:
💧 90% of Europeans are connected to wastewater collection systems.
🌍 89% are connected to wastewater treatment plants.
🔧 Europe's sewer network stretches for 3.3 million km, enough to circle the Earth more than 80 times.
🌱 Two-thirds of Europe's wastewater already receives tertiary treatment to remove nutrients before being returned to the environment.
⚡ Wastewater treatment plants are increasingly becoming resource recovery hubs, producing renewable energy, enabling water reuse and recovering valuable resources from sewage sludge.

The wastewater sector isn't just protecting today's environment. It's helping build tomorrow's circular, climate-resilient economy.

🚰 Europe's drinking water story is one of quiet success.

Behind every glass of tap water is an enormous network of infrastructure and expertise working around the clock.

A few facts from EurEau's upcoming Europe's Water in Figures 2026 report:

💧 97% of Europeans are connected to public drinking water supplies.

🌍 58% of our drinking water comes from groundwater.

📉 Household drinking water consumption has fallen by 9% since the previous report, helping reduce pressure on water resources.

🔧 Europe's drinking water network stretches for 4.4 million km, enough to circle the Earth around 110 times.

💶 Despite growing challenges from climate change, pollution and ageing infrastructure, households spend only around 1% of their income on water services.

Safe drinking water doesn't happen by accident. It depends on protecting our water resources, investing in resilient infrastructure and supporting the people who keep water flowing every day.

💧 Europe's water services deliver for millions of people every day.
Our new Europe's Water in Figures 2026 report shows:
🔹 97% of Europeans are connected to drinking water services
🔹 Around 90% are connected to wastewater collection and treatment
🔹 Households spend only around 1% of their income on water services

But ageing infrastructure, climate change and emerging pollutants are putting future resilience under pressure.

To keep Europe's water services safe, affordable and reliable, we need long-term investment and stronger pollution prevention.

💧⚡ Water and energy are more connected than many people realise.
Europe's water services are not only essential for public health and environmental protection, they are also playing an increasingly important role in energy transition.

Key findings from EurEau's Europe's Water in Figures 2026 report:

🔹 Water operators are producing renewable energy from biogas, hydropower, solar, wind and heat recovery

🔹 Wastewater treatment plants are transforming sewage sludge into valuable energy resources

🔹 Some utilities can already cover a substantial share of their own energy needs through self-production

🔹 The sector continues to improve energy efficiency while adapting to climate change and new treatment requirements.

The water utility of tomorrow is not just a service provider. It is increasingly becoming a resource recovery and renewable energy hub at the heart of Europe's resilience.
