🏠 Would you like to own a home one day?

We want to hear from young people across Europe!

The International Union of Property Owners (UIPI) is running a short European survey to understand how young people really feel about property ownership: Do we still want to own? What is stopping us? Are prices and affordability changing our plans?

It takes only 5 minutes, is completely anonymous, and is open to anyone aged 35 or under living in Europe — whether you already own property, want to in the future, or have no interest in it at all.

The results will contribute to the European debate on housing and the challenges young people face in accessing property.

The survey closes on 15 September, so every response helps!

Feel free to share it with friends who might be interested!

Are you a young property owner? Do you want to be one? Or do you not really care about it? In all cases, we want to hear from you!

The International Union of Property Owners (UIPI) is delighted to welcome Verband Wohneigentum, a widely recognised non-profit association representing in , as its newest member. With this addition, UIPI strengthens its representativeness of private in , and reinforces the voice of owner-occupiers, who make up the majority of European households.

UIPI is a Brussels-based umbrella organisation representing private property owners across Europe, bringing together national associations that advocate for the interests of both landlords and owner-occupiers. With around 70% of Europeans living in owner-occupied dwellings (Eurostat), this new membership further strengthens UIPI’s voice on behalf of this sector, while continuing to defend the broader spectrum of private property owners in front of EU institutions and international bodies.

Verband Wohneigentum e.V. represents approximately 320,000 members across Germany. It provides independent consumer advice, supports sustainable and affordable homeownership, and advocates for homeowners’ interests at national level. Its membership in UIPI ensures that owner-occupiers will have a stronger presence in the European debate on housing and sustainability.

This new affiliation also strengthens UIPI’s position in Germany, alongside its long-standing member association Haus & Grund Deutschland. Together, both organisations will bring the diverse perspectives of German homeowners and landlords to the European stage and strengthen joint advocacy efforts.

Dr. Kai H Warnecke, President of UIPI, emphasised: “By uniting Verband Wohneigentum and Haus & Grund Deutschland under the UIPI umbrella, we bring together the two strongest voices of German private property owners. This reinforces our ability to represent both owner-occupiers and individual private landlords at European level. Their combined perspectives ensure that UIPI can advocate more effectively for the diversity of property owners’ needs across Europe.”

Peter Wegner, President of Verband Wohneigentum, commented, “An increasing number of decisions that shape the everyday lives of homeowners – from energy-efficient renovations to taxation – are now being made at the European level. By joining UIPI, we ensure that the voice of owner-occupiers is not only heard but taken seriously in these processes. Together with Haus & Grund, we are able to bring the German perspective to Brussels with greater impact.”

In the broader debate on , is a key piece of the puzzle. On 20 May, together with the partners, UIPI co-organised an event hosted by the EESC - European Economic and Social Committeee focusing on the challenges + students face in accessing decent, affordable housing.

📊 Key findings:
- 287,000 Erasmus+ students moved across the EU in 2022
- Most stay in their destination less than a year
- Scammers targeting students surged by 182% in just one year
- Only 29% of students received housing support from universities
- 43% of private landlords struggle to reach international students
- Unfit tenancy laws are the main obstacles to increasing the offer: rigid lease length, regulatory instability, and lack of guarantees

🔑 To unlock this market, we need better , local , models, and fiscal that encourage safe and accessible student rentals.

Solving the challenges of the international student market, a vulnerable and complex segment, will not only improve mobility, but also help identify scalable solutions for broader housing issues across Europe.

Through initiatives like HOME², UIPI remains dedicated to addressing these unique demands and challenges. Our mission is to demonstrate our members’ commitment to delivering high-quality accommodations, adapting it to the diverse needs of various population segments, and to support their work to ensure that reliable and secure housing becomes a reality, including for those embarking on their educational journeys far from home.
