PORTOPIA

PORTOPIA PORTOPIA aims to contribute to a resource efficient port system, by developing innovative approaches

The final result of PORTOPIA is a set of port performance indicators that provide an overview of the environmental, socio-economic and supply chain performance of the European port system. This set is both relevant, given the involvement of ESPO (members) and external stakeholders and realistic in terms of definitions and data collection and has been tested in a large scale pilot. Furthermore, th

ese results will be a platform to develop a European Port Observatory. The concept of a port Observatory will be made concrete (mission, scope, users, input, output) leading to a proposal for implementation, supported by the relevant stakeholders. The project is the first systematic attempt at EU level to determine a set of relevant port performance indicators widely accepted and commonly defined by the entire port sector and other relevant key stakeholders (such as port users, societal groups, etc…). This should lead to a broader societal acceptance of port activities and port investments, as more accurate and more objective comparisons of the impacts of port projects will be communicated. More ports will be able to develop sound stakeholder relationship management by communicating widely accepted and scientifically tested indicators on their activities.
