European Union of the Deaf Youth (EUDY) is a European non-profit organisation whose membership comprises 30 youth national associations of the deaf in Europe. Established in 1987, EUDY is the only organisation representing the interests of the Deaf Young Europeans in Europe. EUDY strives to foster the personal development of the Deaf young persons with a sign language in Europe and to further mutual understanding to advance and protect the rights of and opportunities for the Deaf Young Europeans.

🇪🇺🗳️ A few weeks ago, the EUD General Assembly took place in Larnaca, Cyprus. Our President, Tamara Zúdorová, and Board Member Marino Atigia represented EUDY as observers.

Day one opened with two great workshops. Alexandre Bloxs led the first, on Sign Language rights and EUD was delighted to give every delegate a copy of the book! 📖 Next, Delphine le Maire presented on Mapping Relay Services in the EU. The response from NAD delegates was remarkable, with everyone eagerly engaging and exchanging thoughts on this vital topic. The afternoon then turned to the Extraordinary General Assembly.

Day two focused on the General Assembly itself, motions, approvals, and EUD's annual reports.

It was a weekend of connection: a chance to meet other Deaf leaders, share perspectives, and better understand EUD's past and ongoing work!

19 Deaf young people from Austria 🇦🇹, Romania 🇷🇴, Bulgaria 🇧🇬, Latvia 🇱🇻, Czech Republic 🇨🇿, Ukraine 🇺🇦, and Slovakia 🇸🇰 gathered in Bucharest, Romania for a 4-day project seminar called Across Borders. In a safe and inclusive space, participants exchanged on the conflict, forced displacement, human rights, and empowerment, facilitated by Vera Michailova and Marietta Surenian.

They shared knowledge, learned from one another, and created videos reflecting their lived experiences. EUDY was represented by Vice-President Dominik Holiš and Board Member Marino Atigita, and Capacity Building Officer Ophélie Sicot, who led the project.

This seminar also continues Tea Time, EUDY’s growing online exchange space connecting YNADs across Eastern Europe. 🌍

From 4–9 May 2026, 29 deaf young people from across Europe came together at the EYCB for the study session "Through Our Eyes – Deaf Youth Countering Conflict and Xenophobia", organised by EUDY - European Union of the Deaf Youth in cooperation with the Council of Europe Youth Department.

Throughout the week, participants explored xenophobia and its roots, multiple layers of identity and privilege, human rights, misinformation, and conflict resolution tools.

They took part in a Living Library, group discussions, and prepared visual media outputs, campaigns and recommendations based on their main learning: building connections across the European deaf youth community and bringing these new insights back into their everyday lives!✨

🗳️✨ EUDY at the European Youth Forum General Assembly 2026 in Tromsø! ❄️🇳🇴

Our Board Members Marino Atigia and Joann Spiteri represented EUDY at the European Youth Forum's General Assembly in Arctic Tromsø (7-9 May), joining young leaders from across Europe to shape the now and future of youth rights. 💙

Big congrats to the newly elected YFJ Board 2026-2028, led by President Caillum Hedderman and VP Chloë Cauchi! 🎉

Together with delegates, they passed 12 powerful motions, proving once again that young people are ready to lead change. 🔥 Curious about the motions? Check the YFJ's library

A special thank you to former President Rareș Voicu and former Vice-President Andreea Scrioșteanu who have now ended their term. We want to recognise their incredible work in making YFJ more accessible and inclusive for EUDY over the past years. They even learned sign language and Rareș opened both last year’s and this year’s General Assembly using International Sign. 🫶 We are truly grateful to these two amazing people for everything they’ve done for YFJ and for a more inclusive movement. On 4–5 December 2025, EUDY Vice-President Dominik Holiš and Secretary General Lubna Mehdi attended the European Day of Persons with Disabilities in Brussels, Belgium. 🇧🇪🇪🇺

The two-day conference was inspiring and offered many opportunities for networking and social interaction. We were especially happy to meet our former EUDY Board Member, Lucas Wild, who represents the EDF Youth Committee. It was wonderful to reconnect! 🤝💙

Throughout the conference, we engaged with various organisations and exchanged ideas about youth, accessibility, and disability rights.

The programme covered several important topics through panel discussions, including:
“The Next Chapter in Implementing the Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021–2030
“Funding the Union of Equality: Towards a Disability-Inclusive EU Budget”
“Preparedness and Crisis Management Inclusive of Persons with Disabilities”

On the last panel, Delphine le Marie, a Deaf representative from EUD, highlighted the urgent need for crisis information to be provided in visual formats, not only sound-based alerts — a crucial point for ensuring accessibility and safety for Deaf people.🧏💡

On 2 December 2025, EUDY Vice President Dominik Holiš and General Secretary Lubna Mehdi travelled to Brussels to attend EUD’s 40th anniversary celebration. 🇧🇪

The celebration began in the European Parliament with the launch of “A Signing Europe – 40 Years of Advocacy for Sign Language Rights.” There, we met participants from across Europe, including former EUD presidents, MEP Pál Szekeres, representatives from EDF and WFD, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, European Commissioner Hadja Lahbib, as well as Deaf leaders and representatives from national Deaf associations across Europe. 🎉✨

The programme included several powerful speeches delivered by EUD President Sofia Isari, MEP Pál Szekeres, former EUD President Markku Jokinen, and EUD Vice-President Ronit Laguerrière-Leven. All of them highlighted the same message: the importance of unity in Europe and the need to continue protecting sign language rights — perfectly aligned with the anniversary theme, “A Signing Europe.” 🤟💙

A panel discussion followed, focusing on reflections from the past 40 years and visions for the future. One of the key topics was artificial intelligence — how AI may impact sign languages and what must be done to protect and strengthen them. It was a highly interesting and thought-provoking conversation.
Later in the evening, a gala dinner took place, with a rich programme looking back on 40 years of achievements and memories. We also had the opportunity to network with many Deaf leaders — a meaningful and inspiring experience.

Congratulations to EUD on their 40th anniversary! We look forward to even closer cooperation in the future. 🇪🇺⭐️
