bKash Allows Sending Money to non bKash Users, Digital Product, and Growth

Mobile money giant has announced a feature early this month allowing bKash account holders to send to non-bKash users.

This means bKash users can send money to any mobile number, be the number is a registered bKash user or not. The way the new feature works is simple. When a bKash user enters the bKash menu, it now shows an additional option to send money to any non-bKash users. When a user chooses to send money to a non-bKash user, the system does send the money to the user with a link to download the bKash app and open a bKash account online by uploading user details along with necessary documents and receive the money into their newly opened account. They can also go to nearby bKash Registration Point or bKash registration point to open an account. The money remains valid to receive for 72 hours. The sender can cancel the send money request anytime from the bKash app before the receiver opens a bKash account.

Go Zayaan Launches Subscription Office Pick and Drop Service Express, Ramifications of Pivot

travel platform Go Zayaan has introduced a new office pick and drop service named Go Zayaan Express as Bangladesh slowly emerges out of the pandemic lockdown and business gradually resumes operations.

There is an apparent need for a safe transportation solution for office goers as companies reopen offices and people gradually join offices, albeit with caution. The demand is two fold: 1) individual office goers want and need a safe journey to office as risk of getting infected by the virus increases in regularly available public transport options in Dhaka 2) and companies and organizations want to ensure safety of their people because it is their responsibility to do and it is tied to the performance and trust of the employees.

Navigating the bumpy road for startups

The decade starting from 2010 and ending with 2019 saw the emergence of the growth-through-startup model. The idea originated from Joseph Schumpeter, in 1942—that economies and societies are changed by waves of “creative destruction”, with new ideas and innovation changing the way we live. And this was the key idea at the heart of the growth-through-startup model: create an ecosystem in the business world that encourages innovative startups, and when they succeed and grow, they will be employing people and securing investments, leading to economic growth. And to a large extent, this model has been successful in Bangladesh.

Today, nearly everyone uses services that are offered by a few companies that came to play through this startup boost—money transfer, ride sharing, food delivery, e-ticketing. But it has not been a completely rosy picture; there have been countless stories of failures as well. Now that Bangladesh is approaching graduation from the UN’s Least Developed Country (LDC) bracket, the country’s startups and small enterprises are facing a critical juncture. Strategies and policies made at this point will have long-term repercussions for the future of individual businesses and the economy.

Decentralizing Bangladesh: The BD Assistant Way

A random phone call startled the call center executive of BD Assistant as the mobile number seemed unusual. The caller responded saying that he was calling from the and required BD team’s support in fixing the electrical appliances of his parental home in Rangpur, a divisional city in Bangladesh.

In Bangladesh, we’ve experienced a steady rise of the startup in our capital city Dhaka thanks to the active presence of key ecosystem builders such as incubators, accelerators, angel investors, VCs etc. As the presence of these ecosystem builders are highly concentrated in Dhaka, it’s not surprising that most of our startups are emerging from Dhaka. BD Assistant is an exception hailing from , and are currently exploring to expand their operation to other divisional cities led by a bunch of passionate young entrepreneurs.
