Buy local push gives Woombye shoppers chance to win

Woombye shoppers will have an extra reason to support village businesses in June, with a new buy local campaign offering a $250 prize for spending close to home.

Community Bank Woombye & Districts and the Woombye Community and Business Association have partnered to launch We Love Woombye - Buy Local Month, encouraging residents to support local businesses, local jobs and the village economy.

From June 1 to 26, customers who spend $20 or more at any business in the 4559 postcode can upload their receipt to the We Love Woombye - Buy Local Month page to enter the draw.

The winner will receive a $250 voucher to spend at a participating WCBA business of their choice. The campaign is designed to create a month-long lift for local traders by encouraging shoppers to choose Woombye first for everyday purchases, meals, services and gifts.

“The more they shop local, the more chances they have to win!” said Woombye WCBA & Friends President Milo Frawley.

Businesses are being encouraged to help spread the word by sharing campaign posts on social media, reminding customers to keep and upload receipts, displaying campaign posters or signage, mentioning the promotion at checkout and adding the campaign graphic to newsletters or community updates.

Bendigo Community Bank Manager Hayley Saunders said the campaign was about supporting the people behind Woombye’s shops and services while celebrating the village’s strong community spirit.

“By working together, we can create excitement across Woombye and encourage more people to shop locally throughout June,” she said.
The winner will be drawn on Buy Local Day on Saturday, June 27.

“Shop Local. Support Local. Love Woombye,” said Hayley.

SES leader recognised with Ray Grace Award for service

A young Woombye SES volunteer who joined the organisation while still at school has been recognised for his growing contribution to the community with the Community Bank Woombye & Districts Ray Grace Award.

Sean Saunders was presented with the award by bank representatives during National Volunteer Week, recognising his service with the Woombye State Emergency Service group and his progression into a leadership role.

The award carries a $1000 prize, comprising $750 for Mr Saunders and $250 to be donated to a charity of his choice.

Community Bank board chair Steven Marshall said the award honoured the memory of Ray Grace, a key driving force behind the establishment of the community bank in Woombye.

Mr Marshall said Mr Grace had played a significant role in raising support for the bank before it opened in 2009 and remained actively involved in community initiatives in later years.

“He was a real driver for community things,” Mr Marshall said.

Following Mr Grace’s death, the bank established the award to recognise young people who make a meaningful contribution to the Woombye community. Initially linked to Woombye State School, the award was later expanded to acknowledge young people contributing more broadly.

Mr Saunders said he had not known he was in contention until being told the week before the presentation that he had been nominated.

He joined the SES in 2022, shortly after COVID, looking for something worthwhile to do while he was at school.

“I was in school, I was a bit bored. So I came along to help out, but I’ve stayed on,” Mr Saunders said.

Four years later, he has progressed from joining as a member to becoming group leader of the Woombye SES group.

“I’m now group leader, which is a little bit of a jump from just being a member, but it’s been really enjoyable and I’ve met lots of people who are now friends outside of this as well,” he said.

Mr Saunders said volunteering had also given him the opportunity to assist communities outside the local area, including deployments to Townsville and Bundaberg earlier this year.

“It’s good to travel around and see Australia a bit, but also help out as well,” he said.

While SES work could involve difficult conditions, including operating in rain, wind and slippery conditions, Mr Saunders said the opportunity to assist others was what kept him involved. “It’s good to help out the community,” he said.

Mr Marshall thanked Mr Saunders and the SES for their contribution, saying the timing of the presentation during National Volunteer Week made the recognition especially fitting.

We received an incredibly strong pool of nominations for the 2026 Ray Grace Award, and after celebrating some outstanding finalists, we are thrilled to announce the winner… 👏 Sean Saunders 👏

Since joining the Nambour and District State Emergency Service in 2020, Sean has shown that true leadership isn’t about titles - it’s about action. In an organisation that relies heavily on volunteers, it’s easy for individual contributions to get lost in the bigger picture, but Sean has gone above and beyond, leading in a way far beyond his years.

While completing full-time studies to become a paramedic, Sean stepped up as Group Leader of the Nambour SES Group, taking on the enormous task of training and mentoring volunteers, handling administrative responsibilities, and ensuring the group runs smoothly for the community.

One shining example of Sean’s dedication is how he tackled first aid training for SES members. Previously, courses took 16 hours to deliver, making it difficult for volunteers to attend and maintain qualifications. Sean completed his Certificate IV in Training and Assessment so he could deliver the same nationally accredited course in just 4-5 hours, making training more accessible while respecting volunteers’ time.

Sean’s leadership isn’t just about efficiency- it’s about care. He understands the challenges his team faces and balances safety with pragmatism, always putting others first. His unwavering commitment, humility, and creativity reflect the very spirit of the Ray Grace Award: using influence to lift others and strengthen the community.

We were so proud to present this award to Sean in person, with Ray Grace’s partner joining us at the Nambour SES Facility to celebrate his incredible contribution. 💙

Thank you, Sean, for everything you do behind the scenes, for leading by example, and for inspiring us all. Your service, generosity, and dedication make Woombye and surrounds safer and stronger every single day.

We’re so proud to celebrate Caleb M as one of our finalists for the Ray Grace Award. 🌟

At just 15 years old, Caleb is already making a huge impact in our community through his leadership, kindness and dedication to serving others. Whether it’s volunteering as a Kids Church Leader, supporting local sporting teams, encouraging younger players from the sidelines, or helping neighbours by mowing lawns, Caleb consistently puts others first.

Caleb has shown incredible commitment both in and out of the classroom, earning School Leader, Male Dux and Academic Honours awards, while also giving back through volunteering and supporting those around him. His strong values, humility and willingness to serve make him a wonderful role model within our community.

Caleb embodies the spirit of the Ray Grace Award through his generosity, quiet service and commitment to lifting up those around him. Congratulations Caleb on being named one of our finalists, and thank you for the positive difference you make in our community. 💙
