Unregistered preparers don’t have the required qualifications to advise clients on their obligations, and if they lodge statements to the Australian Taxation Office on behalf of a business, they are doing so illegally. 🧾 Thinking of hiring a Bookkeeper? Make sure they’re a Registered BAS Agent! 💼

It might seem like a good idea to save money by hiring a cheap contract “bookkeeper” — but if they’re not a registered BAS Agent, you could be putting your business at serious risk. ❌

📌 Why it matters:

✅ Only BAS Agents are legally allowed to prepare and lodge BAS, GST, PAYG, and super reports on your behalf.
✅ Registered agents are qualified, insured, and held to professional standards by the Tax Practitioners Board.
✅ They must complete ongoing training and have real-world experience — your numbers are in safe hands.
✅ They’re accountable — if something goes wrong, you’re protected.

An unregistered “contract bookkeeper” can’t legally handle your BAS obligations or process anything GST related — and if they get it wrong, you’re the one liable for ATO penalties. 😟

It is important to be aware of scams. You do not need to set up a new myID or reconfirm your details. Don’t click on links and report the scam.
