They came from very different worlds. Dr John Brabant was a successful orthodontist. Snowy's life had followed a very different path. But when their paths crossed at Quamby House in Albury, an unexpected friendship began.

As John became involved in helping people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage, Snowy helped him understand a world he had never personally experienced. And their friendship became an important part of the early The Carevan Foundation story.

It's one of the most moving parts of John's conversation with Matt Griffith on The Journey. Because sometimes the people who teach us the most are the ones whose lives look nothing like our own. And sometimes the most meaningful connections begin when we stop looking at people's circumstances and simply see the person.

There was a very good reason John Brabant wanted the Carevan to be so colourful. He wanted people to notice it, and to know that poverty exists, and you have to care or turn away.

When John first set out to establish The Carevan Foundation in Albury Wodonga, his vision was about much more than providing meals to people experiencing homelessness and hardship.

But getting Carevan on the road wasn't without its challenges.

Just days before the first meals were due to be served in 2010, a fire destroyed the original food truck and everything the volunteers had worked so hard to bring together. Rather than give up, John and the community rallied. A replacement van was donated, volunteers stepped up, and Carevan was soon out serving meals to people who needed them. And that brightly coloured van became a familiar sight around Albury Wodonga.

But as John shares in his conversation with Matt Griffith on The Journey, Carevan was never really just about the van or the meals - it was about the people, the conversations, connections and unexpected friendships that would become such an important part of John's own journey.

Before The Carevan Foundation, there was a remarkable career in orthodontics.

For more than three decades, Dr John Brabant dedicated his professional life to helping people through orthodontic care at Evolve Orthodontics. But his career extended well beyond the treatment room.

As an educator, researcher and leader within the profession, John shared his knowledge with colleagues and students in Australia and internationally. By conventional measures, he had already achieved a great deal. Yet some of the experiences that would shape him most profoundly were still ahead.

In the latest episode of The Journey, John reflects on the professional path he followed, the opportunities it gave him and the personal challenges and choices that influenced the direction of his life. Because sometimes a successful career is only one part of a person's story - and the greatest lessons come from the experiences we never planned.

"You learn that you and I can be homeless tomorrow."

It's a confronting thought. And one that Dr John Brabant has come to understand through years of working alongside people experiencing homelessness and hardship.

There's a common assumption that homelessness is somehow a person's own fault. But as John explains, the reality is often far more complicated.

Circumstances can change. People can lose their homes, their security, their connections and, perhaps most importantly, their sense of identity.

And when that happens, what they need isn't judgement. It's understanding, dignity and an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

For John, this philosophy has always been at the heart of The Carevan Foundation.

It's never been simply about providing a meal. It's about meeting people as equals, recognising the person behind their circumstances and helping them feel connected to their community again.

A powerful reminder that homelessness can happen to anyone - and that compassion and human connection can make an enormous difference.

Sometimes the biggest changes begin with one small decision.

For Dr John Brabant, it began with a newspaper article. Reading about poverty and homelessness in his own community, John was struck by the circumstances people were facing right here in Albury Wodonga. Rather than simply feeling concerned and moving on, he decided to act.

He couldn't have known then just how far that decision would take him. What began as a desire to help people experiencing hardship would grow into The Carevan Foundation - a community initiative built around food, friendship, dignity and belonging.

It's a powerful reminder that making a difference doesn't always begin with a grand plan.

Sometimes it simply begins with deciding to do something.

HE CHOSE NOT TO LOOK AWAY.

John Brabant | The Journey Podcast

For more than three decades, Dr John Brabant built a successful career as an orthodontist, educator and professional leader. But some of the most meaningful work of his life began with a newspaper article about poverty and homelessness in the Albury Wodonga region.

And a simple decision... “I'm going to do something about this.”

That decision would eventually lead to the creation of Carevan - an organisation that has brought together thousands of volunteers and helped countless people experiencing hardship, homelessness and social isolation.

But John's story is about much more than The Carevan Foundation.

In the latest episode of The Journey, John joins Matt Griffith to reflect on his career in orthodontics, the serious health challenges that changed his perspective, the unexpected friendships that shaped his understanding of people, and the importance of treating everyone with dignity and respect.

It's a remarkable story about the choices we make, the people we meet and the difference one person can make when they decide not to look away.

💡 Stephen's Tip: The cheapest insurance isn't always the best insurance!

When it comes to protecting your home, car, business or other valuable assets, it's important to look beyond the premium and understand what you're actually covered for.

In last week's Finance Fri-yay, Stephen Mamouney joined Matt on Radio 2AY to discuss rising insurance costs and share practical ways to potentially reduce your premiums without compromising the protection you need.

From shopping around and reviewing your excess to understanding the benefits of an insurance broker, there are plenty of things worth considering before your next renewal.

🎧 If you missed it, listen to the full Finance Fri-yay segment here: https://bmgpartners.com.au/finance-fri-yay/

Because as Stephen reminds us: "The best insurance policy is the one that covers you when you need it most!"
