One often neglected area of peoples finances, can be their life insurance and income protection. I'll often hear 'I have it in my super'. There's a number of issues with insurance coverage in super, with the main one being that if you've just ticked a 'default' box, then it's likely you are underinsured. Not to mention that whilst insurance in super used to be cheap, costs are going up in super as well (see excerpt below). It's worth sitting down with a financial adviser to work out what you currently have in cover, and what you might actually need.

Cbus members will see an average 46% increase in death and TPD premiums from July 1.
Default cover premiums will increase between $0.19 cents and $10.24 per week.
There will also be a 12% increase for some income protection categories, the first rise in five years.
Cbus said a typical member - 30 years old and working in a manual occupation - will see their default cover increase from $590 per year to $857 per year.
Media Super members - whose separate insurance product is a much smaller pool of about 29,000 members - will see an increase of between $1.03 and $1.30 per week for default Death and TPD cover and increase of between $3.40 to $6.37 per week for default Income Protection cover.
Cbus said in the past two years there has been a 50% rise in claims, driven mainly by growth in musculoskeletal, injury and mental health claims.

A friendly reminder to get financial advice from a qualified, licensed financial adviser. I have 25 years experience in my field, and as I wrote back in December, my number 1 goal is to limit your losses. This is even more timely now considering some investors have been hit with losses on their superannuation.

Scam warning - well maybe not a scam, but bad investment warning! I met with a client recently who had received a call to look at investing his superannuation elsewhere. The offer sounded good, so he took it up. The administrator of that fund is now in liquidation, and his funds have been frozen. It turns out that this company had raised a few hundred million, but the various projects they were working on had meant that they weren't managing the money well, and clients weren't able to access cash from the fund as they needed.
Sometimes advisers get told that we're too conservative, or we have a too narrow focus. This is one of the reasons. We recommend our clients to invest in tried and true funds and investments, and our number 1 goal is to ensure that our clients don't lose their money. This doesn't mean that you won't experience volatility, but there's a big difference between regular market volatility and actually having your funds frozen, or potentially even suffering an actual loss on your funds.
