We were proud to honour the First Nations people who have served, or continue to serve, in the defence force at a special event in Heywood this week.

Around 80 community members gathered beside the Heywood Indigenous War Memorial Water Tower to reflect and pay their respects. They included members of the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria, Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Winda-Mara Aboriginal Corporation, Glenelg Shire Council and students from Heywood Consolidated School.

First Nations people have been serving in conflict and peacekeeping missions involving Australia for over a century. For many years, their contributions went unrecognised until a service was held in Melbourne during Reconciliation Week 20 years ago.

Thank you to everyone who attended, shared their stories, and created native wreaths to lay at the base of the memorial.

We’re more than just water! Did you know we maintain and renew more than 1,000 kilometres of sewer mains?

If we laid them end-to-end, they would stretch from our coastline to the Queensland border!

Our sewer network is a hidden necessity and it’s easy to forget about all the wastewater coming from our kitchens, bathrooms and laundries that enters the system every day.

But with the average household creating 125,000 litres of sewage every year – enough to fill 30 big brown bins every week – it’s not something you want to manage yourself.

That’s why we’re here – to take a load off your mind.

Less than a week until our favourite microscopic creature boogies into the Lighthouse Theatre!

The Windmill Production Company is bringing their fantastic family friendly show all about tardigrades (aka moss piglet) to Warrnambool’s Lighthouse Theatre next Friday, 5 June at 6:30pm.

Featuring wicked puppetry, choreography, live video and green screen technology, Moss Piglet will unveil the mysteries of the wildly weird tardigrade.

We’re also taking over the theatre foyer before the show! Join us for tardi-crafts and a microscope for a real-time micro-organism search. There’s even a chance to have a selfie with a tardigrade!

We’re used to all kinds of weather, but did you know Victoria has Permanent Water Saving Rules that apply all year, rain, hail or shine?

Under the rules:

- Always water your garden using a leak-free hose with a trigger nozzle.
- Sprinklers and drippers can only be used before 10am and after 6pm.
- Don't hose concrete, paths or driveways – use a broom instead.

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week. This year’s theme, All In is a powerful call for every Australian to actively support and participate in reconciliation.

In collaboration with local community, we’re commemorating 20 years of the Aboriginal Remembrance Service at the Heywood Indigenous War Memorial Water Tower.

There’s also a range of great events happening across the region this week including:

- Hamilton Performing Arts Centre, 10:30am, Thursday 28 May – Featuring guest speakers and morning tea.
- A range of events on Saturday 30 May in Port Fairy including Voices for reconciliation at Fiddlers Green at 11am, Weaving at Port Fairy Community House and market stalls between 9am-1pm.
- Portland Arts Centre – Opening of Jason Walker Mirring – 5:30pm Friday 29 May

Don't let a leak dampen your day! Did you know you can use your water meter to check for leaks?

It's surprisingly simple and early detection helps save not just the environment but your water bill too!

Turn off all water appliances but leave the meter’s stop tap on.
Read your water meter and write down the numbers.
Wait for an hour, making sure you don’t use any water.
Once the hour is up, read your meter again.
If the two readings are different, you may have a leak. Call a licensed plumber to investigate.

It’s National Volunteer Week and we want to acknowledge all the fantastic volunteers in our local community!

We have some amazing employees volunteering for Western District Food Share as well as many other local causes including the SES, CFA, local events, community gardens, sporting clubs, charities, libraries and more.

A big shout out to the community groups, schools and sporting organisations who have received merchandise and funding through our Ripple Effect Program. These fantastic events and initiatives often wouldn’t exist without the many volunteers contributing their time.

As part of our ongoing work to look after water and sewer infrastructure across the region, we’re renewing a rising sewer main located off Madeira Packet Road in Portland.

This sewer main plays an important role in the Portland network. It helps manage sewage from local homes, businesses and industry, making sure wastewater is moved safely and reliably every day.

Across our region, we maintain more than 3,000 kilometres of water and sewer mains.

That’s why renewing and maintaining these pipelines is such an important part of what we do. It helps us continue to provide safe, reliable services to our customers well into the future.

Warrnambool’s Brierly Basin is now home to one of Australia’s largest floating solar arrays!

This is a big step forward for renewable energy and sustainable water services in our region.

Featuring 1,260 bi‑facial solar panels, the new system will generate more than 600,000 kilowatt hours of renewable electricity each year. The panels capture sunlight from above as well as reflected light from the water surface, increasing the efficiency of the system.

The system will also reduce the significant energy costs associated with pumping water from Brierly Basin to the Warrnambool Water Treatment Plant. Helping us use energy more efficiently and keep costs down, which means better value for our customers.

Brierly Basin plays an important role in Warrnambool’s drinking water supply. It’s used as a holding storage for water sourced from the Gellibrand River in the Otways and is supplemented by water captured from the Warrnambool Roof Water Harvesting System.

Water from the basin is pumped to the treatment plant, where it’s disinfected and made safe for drinking and food preparation before being distributed to homes, businesses and industries across Warrnambool, Koroit and Allansford.

The Brierly Basin floating solar system is another practical way to cut our emissions while continuing to provide safe and reliable water services for our community.

Looking for some family friendly entertainment with a splash of science and one of earth’s most fascinating creatures?

In partnership with Windmill Production Company and Lighthouse Theatre, we’re excited to present a show all about tardigrades on 5 June!

This fun-filled show features wicked puppetry, choreography, live video and green screen technology to unveil the mysteries of the wildly weird tardigrade.

These microscopic creatures (also known as water bears or moss piglets), are small but mighty, can survive boiling temperatures and even being in space. Most importantly for us they also work around the clock to help break down all the wastewater from your kitchen, bathroom and toilet.
