Here are some common GST mistakes to avoid when doing your bookkeeping:

➡️Failing to charge GST on the sale of goods and services ➡️Claiming GST credits for an expense on the BAS without possessing a valid tax invoice
➡️Claiming GST on the total of an insurance policy. The stamp duty portion is exempt from GST
➡️Recording interest income with GST. Interest income is not subject to GST
➡️Claiming GST on bank fees. Only merchant fees include GST, other general bank feeds are GST Free
➡️Using the incorrect accounting method. If you are registered for GST on a cash or accrual basis you need to ensure you prepare the BAS on the same basis

~Superannuation for Contractors~

If you pay contractors mainly for their labour, they are employees for superannuation guarantee (SG) purposes, and you may need to pay super to a fund for them.

It doesn't matter if the contractor has an Australian business number (ABN).

Make super contributions for contractors if you pay them:

➡️ under a verbal or written contract that is mainly for their labour (more than half the dollar value of the contract is for their labour)
➡️ for their personal labour and skills (payment isn't dependent on achieving a specified result)
➡️ to perform the contract work (work cannot be delegated to someone else).

If you hire a worker you must check if they are an employee or contractor.

It's important because:

➡️it affects your tax, super, and other obligations
➡️penalties and charges may apply if you get it wrong

You can use the ATO Employee or Contractor Decision Tool to work out if your worker is an employee or contractor for tax and superannuation purposes. Simply answer questions about the working arrangement and you'll generate a report you can keep for your records.
