What helps family businesses thrive across generations?

Recently, Matthews Steer Partner Adrian Misiano attended the Family Business Conference: Asia-Pacific 2026 in Hobart and shared insights alongside Brydie Hull and Cathy Tobin of Tobin Brothers on navigating continuity, leadership transition and change.

One of the strongest messages was the value of getting governance and documentation right from the start. Strong foundations today can help support longevity and smoother transitions tomorrow.

Last Thursday evening, we co-hosted an engaging client event focused on preparing for succession, sale and investment for SME business owners and operators, held at the beautiful Victoria by Farmer’s Daughters.

Bringing together business leaders and advisers, the evening explored key considerations in succession planning, sparking valuable discussion around growth, transition planning and readiness for the future.

A big thank you to our speakers, Charith Mandadige, Ray Short and Matt Skelley FTI CA, along with panellists Jack Delmo, Ashley Sorrenti, Joshua King and Ronan Fenton, for sharing their insights and experience throughout the evening.

This morning, our team came together for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea - a tradition that has been part of our calendar for many years, and one we always look forward to. Those who know us know we love to bring people together for a great cause, and supporting the incredible work of the Cancer Council is something close to many of our hearts

As well as enjoying tea and treats, we held a “Guess How Many Tea Bags in the Jar” competition. Congratulations to Amalia, whose guess of 74 was impressively close to the actual total of 73! 🎉

Thanks to everyone who donated and got involved, we raised $342 for the Cancer Council.

Now we want to know… how many would you have guessed? 👀

Last week, we welcomed the leadership team from VBP our office to share their latest initiatives and collaborate with our business leaders.

Our conversations focused on more than operational alignment – they centred on people, innovation and creating long-term opportunities. From exploring how technology and AI can support smarter ways of working, to strengthening career development pathways and learning opportunities for our offshore team, it was a strong reflection of our collaborative partnership.

Thank you to the VBP team – we look forward to what’s ahead as we continue working together to build a connected, forward-thinking and people-focused business.

The Victorian Government’s 2026/27 Budget has now been released, bringing a mix of cost of living relief, major infrastructure investment, and ongoing fiscal pressure from rising debt and interest costs.

We’ve published two articles to help break it down:

> An overview of Victoria’s underlying budget position, including debt, surpluses, and long-term fiscal constraints. Read here: bit.ly/3QPLkXv

For many family businesses, success across generations isn’t about avoiding change – it’s about navigating it deliberately.

At FBA AU's Family Business Conference 2026, Matthews Steer Partner Adrian Misiano will be part of a session exploring exactly that.

Thriving Across Generations brings together perspectives from Brydie Hull and Cathy Tobin of Tobin Brothers, sharing what it takes to sustain and evolve a family business over time.

It’s a practical conversation grounded in experience, not theory.

Most businesses assume overseas R&D expenditure can’t be claimed under the Australian R&D Tax Incentive.

In reality, it’s often more complex than that.

Esper Satellite Imagery, an Australian space technology company, was advised that their overseas R&D wouldn’t be eligible. Like many in deep-tech industries, their work spans multiple countries — from satellite manufacturing to launch services.

The challenge wasn’t whether the work qualified.
It was how it was being interpreted.

Through an Advance and Overseas Finding (AOF), we were able to demonstrate how that overseas activity could be recognised — unlocking a significant portion of their R&D investment.

This case highlights an important point:
Complex R&D is often not ineligible. It’s misunderstood.

“It’s not broken” might feel like a safe place to sit – but in a growing business, it can quickly become the biggest risk.

In this article Matthews Steer Partner and COO, Catherine Duncan, unpacks why many leadership teams delay change – not because they’re complacent, but because they’re already at capacity.

It’s a perspective we see often in our work with clients at Matthews Steer.

Through our business advisory approach, we help leaders step back, gain clarity, and make confident decisions before pressure turns into problems.

If you’re navigating growth, this is a valuable read: bit.ly/4sJ8XxX
