Congratulations to Our Shining Star 🌟 Arlo Wins Gold in the NSW Write On Competition!

Arlo D was the winner of a Stage Two Gold Award in the NSW WriteOn competition.

The WriteOn competition is an annual creative writing event for students in Years 1-6 and is run by NESA in association with the State Library of NSW. Students write an imaginative text up to 500 words on a quote. These young authors create an imaginative text of up to 500 words, using a provided stimulus.

Arlo was presented with his award on Thursday, September 10th, at the State Library where he also read his submission titled Peas are Cursed. His exceptional writing skills and imaginative approach to the quote “It was a small thing, but it made a difference” earned him the prestigious Stage Two Gold Award.

By engaging in such competitions, students are encouraged to think critically and articulate their thoughts effectively. We are so proud of Arlo and congratulate him on this remarkable achievement. 🖊

National Success for Young Poetic Talent at OLSS 🌟

We are beyond proud to announce an incredible achievement by our very own Year 3 student, Lewis A, who has won the lower primary school section of the prestigious Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Award with his captivating poem, The Traveller! 🎉✍️ With over 8,000 entries, submitted this year, Lewis' poem stood out, showcasing his exceptional talent and creativity.

In addition to Lewis taking out first place OLSS had another two students who were shortlisted. Congratulations goes to Henry H for being shortlisted with his poem The Jellyfish, and to Ava T, who was commended in the upper primary section for her work The Envelope. Your passion for poetry is truly inspiring! 👏👏

The Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Awards invite students from Kindergarten to Year 12 to participate in Australia’s largest and longest-running poetry competition. It's a wonderful opportunity to explore the beauty of language and express your thoughts, feelings, and experiences through poetry.

A special mention must go to Mrs Barnes who mentors and encourages our young writers to dream, write, and share their voices with the world. 📚✨

♟️ The OLSS Chess Club joined fellow young chess players from across the Central Coast for a brilliant day of strategy, connection and friendly competition.

Hosted by , the tournament brought together students from OLR Wyoming, OLR Shelly Beach, Our Lady Star of the Sea Terrigal and other schools from the region.

Facilitated by Neil from the Sydney Academy of Chess, more than 60 students competed in a Swiss-style tournament, demonstrating incredible focus, strategic thinking and sportsmanship throughout the day.

Our Catholic schools achieved some outstanding results, led by Lennox from OLR Shelly Beach, who finished the tournament undefeated and was crowned the overall winner.

Richi from OLR Wyoming secured an impressive second place, followed by our very own Adam and Charlie from Our Lady Star of the Sea Terrigal in fourth and fifth place, with Soren from OLR Wyoming also achieving a fantastic seventh-place finish among more than 60 competitors.

Congratulations also to OLR Shelly Beach, who took out the award for Top School.

We are incredibly proud of all of our students and the way they represented their schools and our wider Catholic school community.

Days like today highlight the strength of our Central Coast Catholic schools and the opportunities created when our communities connect, collaborate and celebrate one another’s success.
