Reporting season has delivered a triple treat for retirees and other income investors - strong dividends, special dividends and an $8 billion buyback bonanza.

It's a great time to be invested in Australian equities for income!

Dr Peter Gardner's latest reporting season income analysis has just been published on Livewire Markets.

It was expected to be a sound reporting season for dividend investors, but so far it’s one that has exceeded the expectations of many. For those invested in Australian equities for income, August has delivered a triple treat – strong dividends, special dividends and buybacks. From a cash perspec...

On Monday ANZ announced a $1.5 billion initial on-market buyback.

While economic risk with regards to the continued spread on COVID remain, we think this announcement by ANZ is a strong signal that bank dividends are likely to continue to increase over the next 12-24 months.

In the banking sector broadly we’ve seen in recent months a significant write-back of provisions and strong increases in cash earnings. This strength isn’t just evident amongst the big four but also within other financial services groups such as Bendigo and Adelaide Bank and Macquarie.

Dr Peter Gardner spoke to Money Management about ANZ's announcement and the possibility of more tax-effective off-market buybacks to come.

As ANZ announces a $1.5 billion on-market buyback, this was a “strong indicator” that bank dividends could continue to rise for the next 12 to 24 months, according to Plato.

For many investors, tax should be a boon, not a burden.

We're proud to be one of the few investment firms that manage equity income portfolios to optimise after-tax returns specifically for retirees and other low-tax investors.

Peter Gardner explains how tax-effective portfolio management can generate much needed additional income in this Livewire Markets article.

Read:

As many Australians spend hours in the coming weeks and months preparing tax returns, for retirees it may be a good time to reassess the tax effectiveness of share portfolios. During the 2021 financial year the ASX200 generated some $60 billion in cash dividends – a exceptional return given the...

In this ausbiz interview, Dr Don Hamson discusses the results and dividend announcements we've seen so far from the banks, the possibility of buybacks and his concerns about retirees investing in speculative assets.

With the big banks reporting standout results Don Hamson from Plato Investment Management sees the possibility of more share buy backs later this year, which will particularly lucrative for investors.

Peter Gardner speaks to Patrick Poke at Livewire Markets about Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) - one of the key holdings in the Plato Australian Shares Income Fund. Last week FMG was among a number of our holdings which declared a record dividend.

With iron ore price approaching levels not seen since the last great commodities boom, up nearly 200% over three years, many investors are understandably skeptical about how long the party can last. Perhaps that’s the reason for Fortescue Metals Group’s single-digit PE ratio, and a double-digit ...

In Dr Don Hamson's latest article on Livewire Markets, he explains why the Plato team is confident dividends can continue to be a key component in filling the retirement income void. The article follows an announcement from the RBA Governor which confirmed the cash rate is unlikely move up until at least 2024.

We didn’t get another “historic” rate cut from the RBA on February 2, but we did get some absolute confirmation of what we’ve been saying for quite some time - rates are staying lower for longer. In his rate decision statement, Philip Lowe said: “The Board will not increase the...

Did you know Australian retirees could be generating more income from Franking Credits on dividends, alone, than many other asset classes in today's low yield environment. That's on top of dividends paid.

Unfortunately for retirees too many fund managers don't invest with the taxation circumstances of retirees front of mind. Peter Gardner explains further in this Livewire Markets article.

Self-funded retirees and many other income investors continue to be stung by monetary policy decisions. However, taxation benefits in the form of franking credits remain unchanged. In this historic low-yield world it is more important than ever for retirees to ensure their equity investments are eff...
