Franking credits added around 2% p.a. to ASX200 returns over a 10-year period.

This represented 22% of the total return in the test period. Massive.

You won't see this in the reported performance figures. And it's generally exclusive to Australian investors.

The franking credit system was designed to prevent double taxation on dividends. Without it, shareholders would pay tax at the company level, and again at the shareholder level.

A fully franked dividend gives shareholders a "credit" for the tax already paid by the company, meaning:

Franked dividends make a compelling case for including Australian equities in your investment portfolio.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket!

By spreading investments across various asset classes, you reduce the impact of any single assetโ€™s poor performance. This helps achieve steadier, more predictable returns.

Itโ€™d be great if you could consistently hold only the best-performing asset classes each cycle. But this is difficult to do in practice. And diversifying means you donโ€™t have to!

Thinking about setting up an SMSF? Hereโ€™s what you need to know!

Benefits:
โœ… Flexibility: Tailor your investment strategy to suit your specific financial goals and preferences.
โœ… Leverage: Able to borrow to invest, potentially enhancing returns.
โœ… Choice: Access a wider range of investment options compared to traditional super funds.

Things to consider:
โŒ Compliance: Stay on top of complex regulatory requirements to avoid penalties.
โŒ Responsibilities: Take on the administrative and legal responsibilities of managing your own fund.
โŒ Non-APRA: Lack the protection provided by APRA-regulated funds, which can be a risk for some investors.

โš ๏ธ Costs: SMSFs can be more cost-effective or more expensive than retail funds, depending on your balance and how you manage the fund.

Pro-tip: Consider using an SMSF to pool your balance with other family members, thereby reducing the relative administrative and compliance costs.

When building your strategy, there are some general guidelines you can follow depending on your stage of life. However, these shouldnโ€™t be prescriptive.

For example, some retirees have excess financial resources and their goal may be to build generational wealth to pass on to their loved ones. In contrast, some accumulators have a lower risk tolerance and sufficient financial resources to meet their retirement goals without taking on extra risk.

A good adviser will understand what drives you, build you the right strategy, and help you stick to it over time.
