It’s Commonwealth Bank’s turn to be rocked by an embarrassing fraud scandal that is likely to involve criminal activity and serious vulnerabilities in the lender’s systems.

The roughly $1 billion in potentially fraudulent loans CBA has identified indicates holes in the bank’s application processes and in the way documents are verified. This is almost unheard of in today's highly regulated market and the level of compliance required to be maintaiined. And to think CBA is only one of 2 Lenders accrediited to the 2% deposit Government Equity Scheme. This has been extremely downplayed in the Media ... will they recover all the funds, even after they sell a few securities they foreclose on = NO. IMO and prior experience in investigating, ponzi schemes, money laundering and fraud, there will not only be significant losses, but what a major embarssement to CBA. Far from systemtic, alledgedly there will be CBA staff involved. Fraud on this scale needs someone on the inside.

The bank’s application processes and the way documents are verified leave it vulnerable. The sector must lift its game to protect the integrity of the market.
