This year's Federal Budget has some real wins for business owners - but also some changes that need to be on your radar.

The instant asset write-off is being permanently set at $20,000 from 1 July 2026. No more year-to-year uncertainty. For small businesses investing in equipment or upgrading assets, that's a meaningful change.

But it's not all upside. The FBT exemption for electric vehicles is being wound back, loss carry-back rules are shifting, and R&D incentives are being reformed.

If you run a business, this one's worth understanding before the new financial year.

If you own an investment property, hold assets in a family trust, or have pre-1985 assets - the 2026-27 Federal Budget is a significant moment.

From 1 July 2027, negative gearing on established residential properties will be restricted. The 50% CGT discount is being replaced with a CPI indexation system and a minimum 30% tax rate on capital gains. And from 1 July 2028, a minimum 30% tax will apply to discretionary trust distributions.

These are not minor tweaks. For many investors and family groups, this will require a real look at how assets are held and how income is structured.

The changes aren't in effect yet - but the planning window is now.
