Those who studied history well might remember the city-states of medieval Europe. Back then, caravans of merchants traveled from one city-state to another, bringing luxury goods and news from far-away places. It was this lifestyle that enabled these merchants with freedom of mobility and choice. It is a very similar concept to the one described by Michael Ondaatje in his book The English Patient. The author envisioned complete freedom, without borders or nationalities limiting people in their strive for development and progress.

Today, broader access to the financial markets through decentralized finance marks the beginning of the open world. DeFi has been highly positive from the standpoint of wealth accumulation and cheaper financing, giving new meaning to the concept of “finance for everyone.” By removing intermediaries via the use of blockchain technology, DeFi widens the scope of financial transactions while significantly lowering their costs. It is evident that DeFi is the future of finance and other industries. The only question remaining is: How fast will we get there?

The decentralized finance (DeFi) sector has been sitting in the backseat since whipping up a frenzy in the summer of 2020 through the first quarter of 2021. Currently, investors are debating whether the crypto sector is in a bull or bear market, meaning, it’s a good time to check in on the state of DeFi and identify which protocols might be setting new trends.

Here’s a look at the top-ranking DeFi protocols and a review of the strategies used by users of these protocols.

Non-fungible token (NFT) projects have been hard hit by the price decline across the cryptocurrency ecosystem and the current bearish conditions have spared few tokens from a price collapse.

One project that is attempting to get back on solid footing is Immutable X (IMX), an NFT-focused layer-2 (L2) scaling solution for the Ethereum (ETH) network designed to offer near-instant transactions and zero gas fees for minting and trading.

LimeWire was a free P2P file sharing platform used by over 50 million people monthly. The site, founded in 2000, functioned for ten years before it got shut down by federal court after a four-year battle with the Recording Industry Association of America.

Last year, Austrian brothers Julian and Paul Zehetmayr bought the rights to LimeWire’s name and are planning to adapt it to the next generation of the internet. They will create an NFT marketplace focused on music, plus art and entertainment products.

The platform will relaunch in May as an NFT site where users will be able to buy and trade limited edition NFTs without a crypto wallet. The founders said they want to make NFTs as accessible to everyone as possible.

“The issue with the NFT market is that most platforms are decentralized. If you look at Bitcoin, all the exchanges are making it really easy to buy, trade and sell Bitcoin. There’s no one really doing the same in the NFT space,” Julian Zehetmayr told CNBC.

“We’ve obviously got this great mainstream brand that everybody’s nostalgic about. We thought we needed to build a real mainstream user experience as well,” he added.

The entrepreneur brothers also plan to launch a LimeWire token, which will enable holders to vote on LimeWire policy changes and select which artists are featured in the site’s music charts.
