Australia ranks third for median wealth per adult. That is worth recognising.

According to the UBS Global Wealth Report 2026, the figure is approximately A$292,000, behind only Luxembourg and Belgium.

This measures assets less debts, not annual income or money sitting in the bank.

Property ownership is an important part of that picture, alongside superannuation, savings and other investments. Wealth built over years of working, paying down debt and accumulating assets.

It does not mean everyone is comfortable or that buying a home is easy. But it is a positive reminder that financial pressure today and wealth built over time can exist together.

For homeowners, a home is more than somewhere to live. It can also be a significant part of their longer term financial position.

To finance its record-breaking yen-defense operations, Japan appears to have liquidated a significant portion of its US Treasury portfolio. According to Finance Ministry reserve data, Japan's foreign securities holdings plummeted by a historic 98.6 billion) to bolstering the yen, with part of that campaign carried out in coordination with Washington.

The sales were likely focused on shorter-dated Treasuries, given their superior liquidity and the fact that offloading them reduces the risk of unsettling long-term yields or provoking pushback from US officials. This consideration is particularly acute as the US grows increasingly vigilant about the long end of the curve; Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently doubled the volume of long-dated debt buybacks scheduled through November 4 to help keep those yields in check.

By the end of August, Japan's total foreign currency reserves had decreased by $94.6 billion, settling at $995 billion. Nevertheless, authorities still retain ample firepower for future interventions—including this remaining buffer and an untapped $60-billion-per-day swap facility with the Federal Reserve. Ultimately, Japan's Treasury sales add yet another layer of strain to an already fragile US bond market.
