Senator Jacqui Lambie continued the fight for an expanded home loan panel for Veterans at Senate Estimates.

Under the Defence Home Loan Assistance Scheme, Defence Members and Veterans can choose only from a panel of 3 lenders. This lack of competition leads to higher rates, and a vast amount of Veterans being unable to access their entitlement under the Scheme.

There is no good reason for a closed panel, so we are leading the campaign to expand it — and give a fair go to Defence members and Veterans.

The first home buyer scheme has 33+ lenders. The Defence scheme has 3.

In one month the Defence Home Ownership Assistance Scheme will be locked in for another seven years, and it still only lets veterans use their entitlement with one of three banks.
As the leading DHOAS brokerage in the country, we speak to veterans every day who cannot access their entitlement at all, because they do not fit the credit criteria of those three banks. Others qualify but pay a higher rate than they would elsewhere. You shouldn’t have to choose between a competitive rate and what you earned through service.
Opening the scheme to more lenders would bring rates down and let more veterans actually use it.

This is not about brokers or banks. It is about making a scheme fair for the people who served.

We have written to Canberra, and next week Senators will be asking the Government why veterans are being locked out of their entitlement. Phil Thompson MP spoke about this in parliament a few nights ago. Channel 10 is covering the issue Nationally at 5pm tonight.
