Meet the Team: Luke Lyon, Graduate Wealth Management at Burrell

Luke has spent almost 2 years at Burrell in a unique dual role — supporting the advice process across investment portfolios, superannuation, retirement planning and aged care, while also putting his Finance and Computer Science degree from QUT to work on the IT side, including redeveloping an internal full-stack app advisers use to review client portfolios. He's now building on both sides of that skill set through further financial planning studies with Kaplan Professional, on his way to becoming a qualified adviser.

"What I enjoy most is the problem-solving side of financial advice," he says. "Every client has different circumstances and objectives, so I enjoy working through the numbers and strategy to find practical solutions that can make a meaningful difference to their financial position."

Looking ahead, Luke is progressing through his Professional Year on the path to becoming a financial adviser, with an eye on deepening his expertise in investment and strategic advice, and possibly pursuing further qualifications like a CFA, CFP, or specialist postgraduate study down the track.

Outside of work, you'll usually find Luke staying active and spending time with friends and family - with a strong interest in tech that spills well beyond the office.

Meet the Team: Tim, Research Analyst at Burrell

Some people watch the market. Tim tries to understand the story behind it.

Tim has spent the last 3 years in finance, following markets and equities for closer to 7 — a curiosity that started well before his career did. He studied Finance and Law at QUT, right here in Brisbane, drawn to its practical approach to learning, including hands-on experience through the student-managed investment fund.

As a Research Analyst, Tim digs deep into companies — understanding what drives them, how they're positioned against competitors, and what that means for their valuation. "Markets and companies are evolving stories," he says. "There's always something new to learn and understand — you can dig deep into a single company, or zoom out to the economy, politics, emerging trends and technology."

Looking ahead, Tim sees his career moving from analysis toward portfolio management — taking that research and turning it into investment decisions and recommendations.

Outside of work, you'll usually find Tim outdoors — hiking, surfing, or on the tennis court when time allows.

What Burrell is watching: Quality Businesses

What separates a good business from a great investment?

At Burrell, we're always looking beyond the headlines.

This week, we're focused on three characteristics that often define quality businesses:

✔️ Consistent earnings growth

✔️ Strong cash flow

✔️ Pricing power

While no business is immune to changing market conditions, companies with these characteristics are often better positioned to navigate different economic environments.

If you could only choose one quality when assessing a business, what would it be?

Week 3 – Valuation

Would you rather buy an incredible business at the wrong price... or a good business at the right price?

It's a question investors face every day.

This week we're watching:

💰 Companies where valuations may have become stretched.

📉 Businesses that could be overlooked by the market.

⚖️ The difference between price and value.

One of the biggest lessons in investing is that a great business doesn't automatically make a great investment.

Price matters.

What's more important to you—buying quality, or buying value?

Week 4 – Economic Signals

Markets often move long before the economy does.

That's why investors spend so much time watching the signals that shape the bigger picture.

This week, we're keeping an eye on:

📊 Consumer confidence

💼 Employment trends

📈 Business investment

Individually, these data points only tell part of the story.

Together, they help build a picture of where the economy—and markets—could be heading.

Which economic indicator do you pay the most attention to?

Reporting season has just wrapped — and once again, the headline profit number didn't tell the whole story.

This year we saw companies post solid profits and still get punished by the market, and others surprise on the upside despite a soft top line. The difference almost always came down to three things: revenue quality, cash flow, and the guidance management gave for the year ahead.

Swipe through for our take on the season that was, and what it's telling us about the months ahead.
