Eugenia's feedback on yesterday's SBAA event featuring Denis Wagner: "The Wagner family is an Australian icon in the construction industry, and Denis generously shared insights into the successes and challenges the family has faced in building the Wagner Group into the listed company it is today, with operations across Australia and other markets. Denis also shared his views on a number of important topics, including energy, migration and the construction industry, and provided recommendations from a private-sector perspective. One of my key takeaways from his presentation was that it would be beneficial for the Australian economy to pay greater attention to regional and rural economies, which have significant potential to contribute to the country's future development. It was a very interesting and insightful morning. Looking forward to the next SBAA event!"

The biggest mistake in capital raising right now? Treating it like a choice between debt or equity.

In the past few weeks, we have been in multiple business and founder conversations where the same question comes up: “Should we raise equity or take on debt?”.
One founder waited too long and lost optionality. Another defaulted to equity—just because it felt safer.
Here’s the reality: You need to look at the whole capital stack. In a higher-rate, lower-growth environment, the wrong structure kills flexibility faster than running out of cash.
What works: Don’t “choose” capital—design it.
• Growth → flexible/equity
• Working capital → short-term debt
• Expansion → structured debt
Then sequence it. Cost of capital is no longer just price—it’s timing and control.

Introducing William Stannard, an early career finance professional with a background in commercial energy insurance, specialising in oil and gas. During his time in insurance broking, William co-ordinated insurance renewals for enterprise-scale clients including oil-majors and large-scale renewables clients.

William is a Bachelor of Commerce with a finance major graduate from the University of Queensland. He has completed his CFA Level 1 and is currently a CFA level 2 candidate.
