If you’ve ever been scammed, there’s a chance you didn’t tell anyone. That’s a common reaction but it’s also part of the problem.

Scammers are usually large criminal operations with scripts, pressure tactics and technology designed to avoid detection.

It’s not because you weren’t cautious or savvy enough, but because the deception was built to work.

The more we stay quiet about scams the less chance we have to stop them.

So, this Scams Awareness Week we want to say it plainly – being scammed isn’t a reflection on you.

> Stop: if you get a request for money or sensitive details, especially if it seems urgent – slow down.

> Check: Always verify who you’re dealing with before taking any action. Call the organisation on a number you’ve found independently – not one you’ve been given.

> Protect: Report it. Tell the real organisation, report it to Scamwatch and if you’ve had money stolen call your bank immediately.
