What is Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI), and when might it apply? π‘
Buying a property is a significant milestone, and understanding the costs involved can help you prepare for the home loan process. π
Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) is generally designed to protect the lender if a borrower cannot meet their home loan repayments. It does not protect the borrower from repayment obligations.
π‘ When might LMI apply?
βοΈ It may apply when you borrow more than 80% of the lenderβs assessed property value.
βοΈ It can apply to both owner-occupied and investment property loans.
βοΈ The premium and eligibility requirements vary depending on the lender, loan type and individual circumstances.
π Did you know? Some eligible borrowers may have access to LMI waivers or alternative arrangements, subject to specific eligibility criteria. These options may not be available to everyone.
Remember, LMI is just one of the costs to consider when exploring your home loan options. If the premium is added to your loan, it increases your loan balance and the interest payable over time.
