Modern slavery risks are still hiding in the supply chains of everyday products - from solar panels to clothing to food. Advisers are increasingly expected to help clients navigate these issues, but the information they receive is often too vague to be useful.

At the Responsible Investment Association Australasia Conference, Måns Carlsson OAM and Karen McLeod together with Rachel Alembakis and Ethan Kusch will unpack what real human rights due diligence looks like in practice: site visits, worker interviews, escalation pathways, and genuine remediation. Måns’ on‑the‑ground experience shows exactly what meaningful action looks like, and why advisers need to be able to tell the difference between glossy reporting and real risk management.

And the timing matters. Australia is preparing to strengthen its Modern Slavery Act, with mandatory due diligence, clearer expectations, and stronger enforcement all on the horizon. Advisers will play a key role in lifting standards across the sector.

The session will give advisers practical tools to assess fund managers, ask sharper questions, spot red flags, and communicate these issues clearly to clients. If you want clarity, confidence, and real‑world examples, this workshop will deliver.

We highlight Meridian Energy, a company we invest in, as an equal opportunity employer with Advanced GenderTick accreditation.

In celebration of Women's achievements - Leanne Robb Procurement Engineer, Renewable Construction Team of Meridian Energy tells her story and career trajectory. Leanne has been right on the cutting edge of Meridian delivering the first large-scale grid battery storage system and the first solar farm.

Having come close to throwing in the towel, only to find her feet, Leanne is passionate about encouraging young women to consider engineering as a career.

She has volunteered for the Wonder Project – an initiative that aims to inspire young people to take on STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, and was a diversity and inclusion ambassador at Aurecon.

Having grown up in Wellington appreciating that weather conditions could serve a greater purpose than folding umbrellas in half, it’s no surprise that Leanne Robb ended up in the renewable energy sector

A huge thank you to our amazing clients and everyone who joined us last week to celebrate Ethical Investment Week with our special screening of Future Council. Your presence made the evening not only a success, but a truly meaningful one.

The film invited us to listen to the next generation’s voice — and what a voice it was: bold, imaginative, and refreshingly honest. One moment that had the whole room smiling was when the ING Bank executive was asked when the bank might reconsider its approach to lending in the future.

“I’m not asking you to take a jump-off-a-cliff risk (with your business decisions) — just maybe a rolling-down-the-hill risk.”

It was a cheeky but powerful reminder that change doesn’t have to be radical to be real. Sometimes, it’s about taking that first gentle step toward a more ethical, sustainable, and values-aligned future.

We’re so grateful to work with clients who are already asking the big questions, making thoughtful choices, and shaping a legacy that future generations can be proud of.

Here’s to investing with heart, mind, and hope.

Reframing Intergenerational Wealth Through Values and Voice

The recent AFR article, published along-side Ethical Investment Week, featured insights from adviser Karen McLeod who is also part of the Ethical Advisers’ Co-op. The piece helped frame a growing conversation around intergenerational wealth transfer, not just as a financial transaction, but as a deeply values-driven process.

The Ethical Advisers’ Co-op was invited to contribute to the article, helping shape the narrative through the lens of ethics, family values, and legacy. Karen McLeod noted that beneficiaries are increasingly involved in decisions about whether to divest from companies that no longer reflect their values and reinvesting in climate-positive or socially impactful opportunities.

This shift isn’t just about ethical outcomes. It’s also a chance to start important conversations between generations and about how wealth is passed on, how it’s used, and what kind of world it helps create. Families are engaging in discussions about financial and ethical priorities and advisers are playing a key role in navigating these conversations.

For many, inherited wealth is no longer just a legacy of financial security it’s a chance to leave a positive impact for future generations.

This year’s Ethical Investment Week focus: the strong connection between Ethical Investing and Growing Generational Wealth - brought this conversation to life. Through events, discussions, and the screening of the film Future Council, we invited people to experience the next generation’s voice. The film offered a powerful vision of what young people hope for and expect from the world we’re shaping today.

Together, the AFR article and Ethical Investment Week have helped spotlight: ethical investing is not just about avoiding harm, it’s about creating a legacy that future generations can be proud of.
