I’m a little late posting but I made up for it in length 🤣
What a fantastic day at Kerrobert for the kid’s 4-H show and sale.
Big thank you to the organizers who do such a great job every year. Also huge thanks to our club leaders who do so much! Not to mention all the older kids in the club that give so much of their time to helping out and mentoring the younger members. We are so fortunate to be part of such an amazing club that truly feels like a second family.
Lilly had a pretty tough time with her steer Bob. At one point in the ring he reared up and things could have been really serious, but she had her club their to pull her out of the way, get the steer under control, and give her lots of hugs. After it was over she said “Mom I really love our club, today my whole club saved me.” and they really did. Without those older members watching out for her a bump and a scratch could have been so much worse. So 1 million thanks to all those great kids💚 She still says she loves bob though, and finished out the day with a good attitude and lots of new friends. That’s a win in my books!
Conway had a really good day. This year was his first year showing a heifer and a steer, and I’m very proud of how well he did. His heifer didn’t place (which we knew going in) but he worked hard with her, learned a lot about fitting and got that girl looking her best! (again not without the help of our older members). Sherman did really well, made it into the top weight category and placed 5th in the class. There were some pretty amazing steers that made their way to town, so definitely not disappointed with his results. Just happy to be there.
I would just like to encourage all the commercial kids out there to get involved with 4-h. Showing cattle was not something that Reid or I grew up with, in fact Conway’s first year I actually thought they were joking when they said we were going to be washing the calves! But what an amazing experience it’s been for both of them. It doesn’t matter how much they know when they start, it’s all about seeing the growth and improvement year to year. It’s also about making lifelong friends, and trying to pass along some of that knowledge onto others. My kids will never forget how those older kids taught them so much, and I will guarantee they will paying that forward in the years to come. So if your on the fence about 4-h I encourage everyone to get involved. We have a wonderful member who lives in town, who doesn’t have cows but her animal lives here with us. She has done an incredible job and is a great reminder that 4-h is for anyone who loves animals and is willing to work hard.
Last but definitely not least, big thank you to the kids steer buyers!
Sherman was purchased by Eagle Creek Veterinary Services, and Bob was bought by Hiill Acme Machine Ltd and WCW Contracting Ltd.
