A Little About Me...

For those I haven't had the chance to meet yet, I'm Tracey Swan, co-founder, Managing Director and Senior Finance Broker at PTR Finance Group.

I've spent much of my career in finance, including senior credit roles within major banks before establishing PTR Finance Group.

What I've always enjoyed most about this industry is getting to know the people and businesses behind the numbers.

Whether it's helping an owner-operator purchase their next truck, a transport company grow its fleet, a tradie invest in new equipment or an established business work through a more complex finance requirement, no two clients or situations are ever quite the same.

For me, it's about taking the time to understand what someone is trying to achieve and then working out the best way forward.

I'm incredibly proud of the business and team we've built at PTR Finance Group, and even after all these years, I still genuinely enjoy seeing what the right finance solution can help a business achieve.

Nine years alongside Finmec

We first met Finmec (then trading as EMS) back in 2017, when Larry Thomas, their in-house CPA and CFO, made the introduction. The first assets we put together for them were generators, service utes and an Elefante high-pressure fog machine.

Finmec got going in 2007 and they've come a long way since. Alongside the field and workshop maintenance and mechanical work, they've built up equipment storage and a hire fleet. These days they employ more than 100 people, with over 170 machines out on hire including dozers, water carts, graders, tippers and water cart trucks among them.

We've been lucky enough to have a hand in a fair bit of that growth. Every deal has come down to the same thing: getting the right facility in place at the right moment, so the gear could be on the ground earning when the work was there.

What we've admired just as much is what the Finches give back to Port Hedland. They've been generous supporters of the community, and we've valued the friendship as much as the work.

It was lovely to catch up with Dan and Larry over lunch yesterday — no small feat with their schedules. Nine years on, it's a real pleasure to see what Dan and Jessica have built.

Congratulations to Dan, Jessica and the whole team — here's to the next nine.

Did You Know You Can Finance Your Vehicle & Equipment Registrations?

For businesses with multiple vehicles, registration renewals can create a significant hit to cash flow, especially when several fall due around the same time.

What many business owners don't realise is that you may be able to spread the cost of your registrations over 10–12 months with fixed monthly repayments, making budgeting and cash flow much more manageable.

Even better, if you operate multiple vehicles:

🚛 3 to 9 vehicles – You can request a common renewal date so all registrations align.

🚚 10 or more vehicles – You may be eligible for fleet licensing, allowing your entire fleet to be renewed on one annual date.

Instead of juggling multiple renewal notices throughout the year, you could simplify the process with one renewal cycle and predictable monthly payments.

One question I'm asked regularly is:

"Do I have to wait until my tax return is lodged before I can apply for finance?"

In many cases, the answer is not necessarily.

Depending on your circumstances, applications may be assessed using alternative documentation such as an BAS or Bank Statements or draft financials, rather than waiting for lodged tax returns, and notices of assessment.

That can make a real difference if you're ready to purchase a truck, trailer, forklift or other business equipment and don't want to lose the opportunity while waiting on paperwork.

Every application is different, but it's always worth exploring your options before putting your plans on hold.

Don't Judge a Finance Deal by the Headline Rate

One of the most common things I hear is:
"Another broker quoted me a lower interest rate."

My response is always the same...
"Will that actually be the rate you receive?"

Sometimes, the headline rate is based on an ideal scenario. Once the application is fully assessed, the final rate, terms or conditions can look quite different.

That's why I prefer to have an honest conversation from the start.

Sometimes, the best outcome doesn't happen overnight.

In December 2025, I was introduced to Roshan after being referred by another Finance company. The truck he wanted was outside their finance guidelines, and on paper, his application wasn't straightforward.

Rather than looking for a quick approval at a higher interest rate, I believed there was a better outcome available if we took the time to build a stronger application.

Over the next six months, we worked together to put him in the strongest possible position. Along the way, he found the right truck through a private vendor — a purchase that takes more work to finance than a dealer sale, but one we were happy to take on to get him into the truck he wanted.

Because we were patient and strategic, we were able to submit one well-prepared application instead of shopping it around. Multiple enquiries leave marks on a credit profile and invite declines — the approach we took got him an approval first time.

The entire process was managed remotely. Roshan is based in Victoria, and despite never meeting face to face, we built the relationship through phone calls, emails and text messages.

Last month we settled the finance on his 2010 Fuso Fighter with a crane. I checked in with him this week — he's a very happy man.

For Roshan, this wasn't just about buying another truck. It means he can collect significantly more scrap on every trip back to his yard, improving efficiency and creating greater earning potential for his business.

Stories like this are a reminder that finance isn't always about finding the quickest solution. Sometimes it's about taking the time to find the right one.

Still reflecting on a massive weekend at the 2026 WA Mack Muster & Truck Show! 🚛

The highlights started early at the Friday night charity auction dinner with the team from Goldstar Transport. While they didn’t have a rig on the grass at Quarry Farm this year, their dedication to the cause was front and center.

Sunday was just as legendary! It was fantastic to catch up with the crews from Keegan Transport pty Ltd and Camtrans Freight Carriers. A huge congratulations to the Keegan team for taking home the trophy for Best Scania! 🏆 Well deserved for such a top-tier fleet.

I also managed to snap some great photos of the rigs from REGroup and Combined Logistics looking sharp on the day. 📸

Most importantly, the industry came together to raise an incredible $850,000 for cancer research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. 🎗️ Proud to be part of such a dedicated community!
