If you own the company, there's a good chance you've skipped paying yourself super for a few years, which leaves you with a big catch-up cap.

Under the current rules, a dud share is worth something at tax time, because it offsets your winners.

Run the same portfolio through indexation and the holdings that go sideways give you nothing, so your best share ends up setting your entire tax bill on its own.

The number worth writing down here is $10,000. Any vehicle above that gets reported to the ATO when it's newly registered or transferred, so the car is sitting on their system before you've driven it anywhere.

They then line it up against whether an FBT return ever came in for it.

The Ferrari is what makes this one a story, but the reason he lost had nothing to do with the car.

When the ATO asked him to prove his business use, the logbooks he handed over were bad enough that the tribunal decided he'd written them after the fact and threw them out. The same rule sits over a $70,000 Four Wheel Drive.
