Peace of Mind

No matter what stage of life we are at, insurance is necessary. If our family depend on our financially support to enjoy a good standard of living, then we need protect our greatest asset which is our ability to earn an income. We human do not have the ability to foresee the future, unforeseen tragedies such as illness, injury, permanent disability or death can leave us and our family facing tremendous emotional stress. Insurance offers a payout so it can reduce stress during difficult times so we can focus on recovery and keep moving forward.

When we build our client’s insurance cover portfolio, we start with the following four standard cover types:

Type of Insurance
Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD)
Trauma
Income Protection Insurance

Our message to readers:

“When was the last time you review your insurance cover? If you have been working for a few years, most likely you have some insurance under your superannuation. Get in touch with our team and let us review your current insurance policies.

If you do not have any life insurance policy, what will happen if something happens to you? You pay for the car insurance If you own a car. You pay for home and content insurance if you own a house. It does not make sense if you do not protect your most valuable asset which is you? Give us a call and have a chat with our team.”

Australian shares suffered their most bruising session since February on Friday because of concerns that aggressive tightening by central banks could stall economic growth. The ASX 200 index plunged 2.2 per cent or 159.1 points to 7205.6 on Friday. This made for a weekly loss of 3.1 per cent over the 5 days.

Macquarie bank dived 7.8 per cent to $186.90 after the group expressed caution on the economic outlook and declined to issue guidance, despite a 56 per cent increase in net profit in its financial year ended March 31. The other four major banks also closed the session lower. Westpac fell 0.8 per cent to $22.83, Commonwealth Bank dropped 1.3 per cent to $102.40, National Australia Bank tumbled 2 per cent to $31.62 and ANZ declined 0.6 per cent to $26.76.

Western Australia doctor sentenced to jail for non-lodgment of returns

A WA doctor, Dr Iain Russell has recently been sentenced to seven months’ jail and placed on a good behaviour bond for failing to comply with court orders to lodge 18 outstanding income tax returns and business activity statements (BAS).

In 2020, Dr Russell was previously convicted at the Perth Magistrates Court and fined $50,000 for failing to provide the Commissioner of Taxation with the outstanding income tax returns and BAS. In sentencing, Dr Russell was ordered to make the outstanding lodgments within two months. However, he still failed to lodge and was now prosecuted once more.

Dr Russell was sentenced and convicted of 18 charges of failing or refusing to comply with court orders. He will be released from jail after two months, upon entering into a $10,000 recognisance to be of good behaviour for the remainder of his sentence. As part of the good behaviour bond, he will need to lodge each of the outstanding tax returns and BAS by 30 September 2022.

OBP Capital weekly Market Watch

The ASX 200 Index closed over 7,400 points last Friday, its highest level since January 18. The Australian share market rallied to a two-month high last week supported by strong gains from the big 4 banks and miners getting an uplift from increasing commodity prices.

Westpac climbed 0.4 per cent to $23.75, NAB firmed 1.4 per cent to $31.66 and ANZ rose 0.1 per cent to $27.61. Commonwealth Bank dipped 0.3 per cent to $105.92.

Macquarie Group advanced 1.6 per cent to $197.87 after Morgan Stanley analyst Andrei Stadnik raised his price target on the shares to $245 off the back of its commodities and global markets business is set to cash in on a rise in trading activity and volatility.

Health care stocks on the other hand led the market losses. CSL slid 2.3 per cent to $264.81, ResMed 9.8 per cent to $31.58, Fisher & Paykel 11.6 per cent to $22.82, Medibank Private 4.1 per cent to $3.06 and Telix Pharmaceuticals 17.6 per cent to $4.21.

Asset managers were also facing pressure during the week. Platinum Asset Management fell 6.7 per cent to $2.10, Pendal Group 5.9 per cent to $4.50, Janus Henderson 3.7 per cent to $46.42 and Magellan Financial Group 9.8 per cent to $14.20.

Coming up: The treasurer will deliver the 2022-23 Federal Budget at approximately 7.30pm (AEDT) on Tuesday March 2022 amid COVID-19 recovery efforts, flooding in NSW and Queensland and a war in Europe.

OBP Capital Weekly Market Watch

The ASX 200 rose 0.6 per cent or 43.6 points to 7294.4 on Friday, lifting its weekly gain to 3.3 per cent. The index is now back well above 7,000 points and there appears to be a strong tailwind for stocks despite fears of inflation, interest rate rises and world conflict.

The Australian share market has continued to take strong leads from Wall Street where all three major benchmarks have bounced strongly in recent weeks as it appears that money is leaving Europe and Russia and investing in the USA.

Our local markets were led by the energy sector after the Brent crude oil prices rose 8.8 per cent to $US106.64 a barrel. Iron ore prices edged closer to $US150 a tone on renewed hopes for additional stimulus in China to combat the effects of its COVID-19 resurgence. Square led the local technology sector higher again on Friday. The major banks experienced a mixed session.
