In an ideal world, Christmas expenses will be funded from savings. For many people though, Christmas this year will be covered by credit cards, potentially putting them into debt into the new year. Here are 3 quick tips to help you get through the holiday season without the added pressure of relying on credit.

๐ŸŽ„ Give with a personal touch: make homemade gifts such as baked goods, or redeemable coupons for a home cooked meal, a car wash, or coffee date.
๐ŸŽ„ Mix up gift giving: by doing a Secret Santa to cut down the cost of presents, or create a challenge to purchase from good will shops only.
๐ŸŽ„ Get organised early next year: by starting a Christmas fund at the beginning of the 2023 & writing down a list of expenses and presents to take advatange of sales

Do you feel financial pressures during the festive season?

A great first step is to identify your weaknesses when it comes to Christmas so that you can put steps in place to avoid overspending. Maybe you spend too much money at Christmas parties, so take an allocated amount of cash instead. Perhaps you waste money buying gifts last minute, so write a list and start buying early.

Give yourself the best chance possible to eliminate stressful overspending, by becoming aware of your weak spots and prepare for them ahead of time.

Christmas can be a very stressful time for many people when it comes to money, and can often be a trigger for massive blowouts on credit cards. You can break the Christmas credit cycle by preparing for the festive season ahead with a budget.

โ–ช Write down a list of everyone you want to buy presents for and set an allocated amount for each person.
โ–ช Accommodate areas in your budget for stocking fillers, food, decorations, travel, giving, and anything else you can think of.
โ–ช Be realistic about how much you can afford to spend in each area, and do everything you can to stick to it.

Once you have a Christmas budget up and running, you will have a practical guide for your spending and feel more in control over your money throughout the holiday season.

*Emotional Spending*

Have you ever made a purchasing decision simply because you were in a bad mood or stressed out? While it might make you feel good for a moment, that feeling wears off pretty quickly and you are back where you started.

When you are facing the temptation to spend on a tough day, try looking for other alternatives that will be healthier for your mind and your finances such as:
- listening to music
- sink into a hobby you have
- read a good book
- exercise or go for a walk
- take a long bath

Budgets are a powerful tool for so many reasons.

Follow these 5 simple steps to create a budget that will allow you to manage your money with confidence.

- Understand your income: write down how much income you have coming in on a consistent basis and how often you are paid.

- Understand your expenses: work out how much goes out of your account each month due to bills and expenses. These will be your essential costs such as utility bills, food and petrol, medical, school fees, debt repayments etc.

- Allocate for savings and fun: deduct your expenses total from your income total, and whatever money you have left remaining can be allocated to spending and saving.

- Set goals: use your budget to set financial or savings goals and make a plan for them, such as an emergency fund or family holiday.

- Remember to be flexible: as seasons in your life change, so should your budget. Tweak your expense allocations or financial goals as needed so that your budget is working for you, not the other way around.

Do you have a Christmas Fund?

One of the main contributors to Christmas stress is the financial worry that people carry trying to cover all of their expenses.

A great way to prepare for Christmas is by starting a Christmas savings fund at the beginning of the year. Just a little bit each week put aside can end up covering the majority of your Christmas expenses by the time the festive season rolls around.

By putting $20 aside each week, you would have saved just over $1,000 by the end of the year! Can you imagine how good it would feel to start your Christmas shopping with a tidy little fund ready to go?!

By taking it one small step at a time. A small emergency fund is better than no emergency fund at all.

โ–ช Allocate a small amount of money each pay cycle to put aside.
โ–ช A helpful first goal is to have $1,000 sitting in your fund for some protective cushion.
โ–ช Then start working towards building 3 months worth of expenses.

A little sacrifice goes a long way. If you are paid fortnightly, putting only $38 aside each pay will get you your $1,000 in one year, without too much effort at all.
Remember, a small start is better than no start at all.
