Hi, it’s Shaun here. Can I ask a favour from you?

I’ve been helping the Brazilian community in Australia for a number of years. It all started when my neighbour back in the day introduced me to many Brazilians on the Sunshine Coast and it all grew from there. He’s the same guy who also brought Brazilian Jiu Jitsu into my life and made it better in so many ways. But hey, I’m getting sidetracked here... maybe I’ll save the story of how jiu jitsu connects to me as a financial adviser for another chat 😉

On 30 November I’ll be co-presenting with Alvie Oliveira (Mortgage Broker - Capta Financial) & Thiago Borrelli (Professional Investor) at the Sunshine Coast event:

Estratégias de Investimento: Planejamento Financeiro ao Imóvel na Austrália

So that favour I was asking you for?

Can you help me put the word out to all the Brazilians you know who want to make their way in building their wealth in Australia?

It may be obvious to say, but the Aussie financial system is a lot different than in Brazil. And so I find myself helping many Brazilian’s learn the basics about how it works in Australia and to start getting everything moving forward for them.

But I also find myself learning so much about the passion and the hustle it takes to start from scratch in a new country. Not to mention the simple things like the discipline of saving money - Aussie’s have a lot to learn from Brazilian’s in this way. Pretty inspiring, really.

So that’s it. Just forward my message to your Brazilian network and let’s see how many we can help. Thank you 🙏🏼

Too many Australians are living from pay day to pay day – feeling trapped and unable to break the cycle.

This article explains how poor money management leads to cashflow issues and provides advice on how to break the pay-to-pay cycle and get your finances under control.

Now and then, Jodi borrowed $100 from her parents. She’s good for it, and always paid it back. Sadly, Jodi's situation is pretty common. In a worldwide study of over 14,000 Millennials (born 1983 – 1994) and Gen Zs (born 1995 – 2009), around 30% said that they didn’t feel financially secure....

The bull goes up the stairs, but the bear jumps out the window.

This saying helps us to understand that markets rise slow (bull) but they fall quickly (bear). And the speed of this usually catches people by surprise with financial and emotionally damaging consequences.

For many, bear markets can be tremendously frustrating. In this article we look at them as opportunities to create and build new things – and not to fear them when they come.

I'm not immune to getting disappointed. But when things continue to not go the way I want, then I begin to get frustrated. Frustration brings a certain energy with it. We can use it to throw a tantrum and blame this or that, or we can use it drive us forward and create new options for our lives. Let...

I can help you.

People have asked me about the impact of rising interest rates on their home loan repayments. I tell them 'You're going to be paying more - but you're not going to get anything extra for it'.

This puts families in a tricky spot.

The chart in the image will help you get it. It comes from 'Positive Pete'. Peter Switzer is an Aussie economist who writes an entertaining article. But today's message wasn't that positive - or entertaining. No offence intended, Pete.

The article states that the Reserve Bank is speculating on rates going to just over 3% by mid 2023 - that's another 1.75% from where we are now. Pay attention to the very last column on the right - that's roughly the monthly amount your home loan repayment could increase by.

I can help you to deal with this. It's what I do. But don't bury your head in the sand and leave things to the last minute - it's pretty much a certainty that rates will continue on the upward trend. Your family's income is going to get challenged to meet this and the other rising costs across the board.

When I'm not being the financial adviser, I'm training and coaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. It’s been one of the greatest things I’ve done and is responsible for a large chunk of my personal and professional growth. And it overflows to my clients.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a ground-based martial art that uses the principles of timing, angles, pressure and leverage to achieve a non-violent control and submission of an opponent. It was developed so that a smaller, weaker person can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger opponent. Regardless of age, size, gender or physical limitation.

I recently received my Brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - it’s a big milestone for me. And I’m thankful to my Professors and training partners for helping me get better because I need the skill of others to keep me sharp.

Still, even with the help of others, the journey is personal and one that I must travel alone.

I have to face my own fears, deal with failures, embrace the daily disciplines needed to progress - and at times, accept that the path ahead isn’t always clear. But I’m up for it. I’m all in. Because I know that feeling of personal success which comes from hard work and discipline. And it fuels my motivation to keep moving.

One of the greatest things for me professionally is how Jiu Jitsu helps me to help my clients. Many people feel like they’re the smaller, weaker person and that they’re inferior to big, bad life, or debt, or financial mistakes and uncertainty. But I help them learn how to work with concepts that give them confidence and financial power so they can achieve their own goals with whatever resources they have. This is what drives me to be the best financial adviser I can be for my clients.

I knew the setup before I got there. Mikhaila called me to come and have a ‘chat’ with her and Rod about getting their money stuff sorted. She feels like Rod spends a bit too much and they don’t really have any direction with their finances. They weren't in sync.

There was a moment during our chat when Rod looks at me a little sheepishly. I think it just dawned on him that our little get together today was in his honour. We talked openly. I made it clear that there’s no judgment from my end. Instead, I gave him my very own confession – that it was my wife who first taught me how to budget. When we first got married, I didn’t have a clue – I was a spender, she was a saver. I ended up teaching Mikhaila & Rod the same spending and saving strategy that we use in my family, and which has got us through for the last 25 years. This was one of those times when they just needed someone on the outside to give them a hand.

As a financial adviser, I don't just help people with their money - I'm also a coach, a mentor, and a mediator. I provide advice to people who are dealing with the dramas of everyday life and help them succeed.

Even when most markets are being savaged, this question still gets asked. But sometimes you just need some wise words to point out the obvious.

This article discusses the best investment you can make. But to do so, we need to stop thinking in terms of dollars only.

Most markets are down, and everything looks nasty out there. It's not just those markets you expect to be volatile, like crypto, but even the so called 'good stuff' too, like what your super fund is invested in. It's all been painted red and left to plummet. Even gold and silver, those great safe-ha...

It's not fun in the market right now. These are definitely testing times with all the fear and anxiety and the feeling of powerlessness. And it's perfectly normal to get concerned when the markets are a mess and your investments are declining.

This article discusses the good times that can come into focus during those testing times. And having a mindset to see new opportunities and the things that could actually go right for you would be one of your greatest assets in times like this. It's how we respond to testing times that helps to grow and become better.

It's normal to get concerned when the markets are a mess and your investments are declining. The thing is, they usually get this way because something messed them up - a global pandemic, bad economic news, wars etc. What's obvious is that news headlines proactively feed into the mess, influencing pe...

Most people have now heard of cryptocurrency. But despite their awareness, the majority have no idea how the blockchain technology associated with it will disrupt every business model on the planet. This goes for the businesses that currently employ them and pay their salary.

The world is changing and it’s time we engaged our brain to better understand our changing times. This article will give you a brief overview of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology and how it proposes to change the world for the better.

It’s time for a confession. I’ve been ignorant. I had no idea how cryptocurrency and the blockchain technology associated with it will disrupt every business model on the planet. This goes for the businesses my clients work for and the impacts to my self-employed business clients in terms of the...
