ARE YOU WEATHER-READY THIS SUMMER?

Last year was an extremely challenging summer for all Australians. Everyone will remember 2019/20 for the bushfires but few will know that storms and floods over the same period caused over $3 billion in damage and gave rise to more than 250,000 insurance claims.

This summer, the Bureau of Meteorology has officially declared a La Niña event that is likely to bring an increased risk of storms, cyclones and flooding to some parts of the country. This is particularly concerning as we continue to see under-insurance and a lack of flood cover for customers in high-risk areas.

We want to help you understand the extreme weather predicted for this summer and what it means for you.

What weather will La Niña bring?
La Niña is a natural phase of Australia’s weather cycle that warms the waters off Australia’s north coast, increasing cloud development and rainfall.
This heightens the chance of hail, storms and associated flooding through the warmer months of the year across central, eastern and northern Australia.
A La Niña event is also likely to increase the number of cyclones we experience and bring forward the start of the cyclone season in the north of the country.
Fortunately, La Niña is also likely to result in a milder bushfire season, nationally.

Let's talk Home and Contents Insurance.
When it comes to home and contents, wardrobes tend to be routinely overlooked and undervalued. Do you think your sums insured on your wardrobe are adequate? Here are 5 items not to overlook when valuing your wardrobe:
1) Suits. Suits can easily be overlooked, especially if they’re kept in storage covers. Tailored suits typically cost between $1,000 and $3,000.
2) Dresses, jackets and coats. Dresses from some of the world’s leading designers can cost from $2,000 to upwards of $10,000. Even multiple non-designer items, when combined together, become significant in value. This also applies to clothing types which tend to be higher cost anyway, such as winter jackets and overcoats.
3) Shoes. Designer shoes for both men and women have a distinct reputation for carrying large price tags. Heels average approximately $1,000 per pair.
The average person owns between 10 and 20 pairs of shoes.
4) Bags and accessories. It’s not uncommon to encounter high-value handbags such as a Gucci handbag or Salvatore Ferragamo tote. Prices for these items can range from $1,000 to well over $10,000.
5) Luggage. Designer luggage collections by the likes of Louis Vuitton can add up to more than $10,000 for 2-3 pieces. We frequently see carry on luggage from Gucci which can be valued at over $2,000 for a single case.
If you are unsure your insurance meets the needs, send us through your current schedule and chat to us about revaluing your beloved wardrobe today!

Good Morning Everyone,

We are hoping that you and your family are keeping well and safe.

We at Business Insurance Services, are reaching out to you in response to the COVID-19 as we know that this pandemic has caused uncertainty and anxiety for many business owners and individuals, especially in financial matters.

As the COVID-19 situation develops in Australia, it’s inevitable that we will experience a downturn in the economy, with rising unemployment and the possibility of businesses closing their doors.

During an unprecedented event such as this, we expect that you may be looking at ways to reduce your costs and might see insurance as an expense which could be seen as a possible saving. We firmly believe that insurance might just be the thing that allows our clients' businesses to survive this crisis when their competitors do not.

That said, here are some suggestions you can consider as far as making changes to your cover to reduce expenses.

1. Increasing the standard policy excess. Consider $250 to $500 or $500 to $1,000, or maybe higher.
2. We do not recommend that you reduce sums insured on key policy sections, particularly Fire and Business Interruption. These classes of cover are subject to under insurance/co-insurance clauses, which could cost you dearly in the event of a loss.
3. Do not remove statute covers such as; Public Liability, Professional Indemnity or Workers Compensation.
4. Consider premium funding on renewal – to further assist with cash flow.
5. Consider dropping some covers you may have which, whilst important and convenient, in the event of a loss, will not largely impact your business in the long term.
For example,
• glass replacement,
• money – this typically covers cash; how many clients deal in cash?
• machinery/electronic breakdown – this can be an expensive cover. It may be cheaper to have a good maintenance agreement to avoid breakdown.

It is said that ‘desperate times call for desperate measures’, and this can be the case when the economy goes into a downturn. When unemployment rises, insurers typically see an increase in crime related claims.

As a result, we recommend you also consider:
* Premises security – alarms and locks. Is the level of you burglary cover adequate?
* Cyber security – who has access to computer systems?
* Employee fraud – it might be time to double check the systems you have in place in these uncertain times.

If there is anything we can do to help you during this uncertain time, please reach out to us either via email at: [email protected] or [email protected], or call us direct on 0456 555 085.

Our very best wishes

Darrell and Courtney Landrebe at Business Insurance Services.

Last week at the Resilium Conference at the beautiful Gold Coast!
We had such a great time at the Gala Dinner, doing the Q1 tower climb and attending the finale Under The Sea themed dinner at Sea World.
It was great to kick back with the other Authorised Representatives of Resilium as well as a few of many of the Inusurers we deal with for a few days.
Here are some awesome pics of the team having a great time.
Bring on next year's conference in the cold but cool Queenstown, NZ!
