Got an ATO debt with your business? There’s been an important change worth knowing about.

Since 1 July 2025, interest charged by the ATO on outstanding tax debts is no longer tax deductible.

For businesses carrying an ATO debt, that can make an already expensive debt even more costly.

We’ve helped a number of our business clients look at another option: using business finance to clear their ATO debt and replace it with a more manageable loan.

Depending on the circumstances, interest on finance used for a business purpose may be tax deductible, so this is something worth discussing with your accountant or tax adviser.

It’s not necessarily about borrowing more. Sometimes it’s simply about structuring existing debt more effectively.

Don’t compare car loans on interest rate alone.

I recently had a client comparing the car finance we had arranged for her with an offer from a major lender.

Their interest rate was 6.71%. Ours was 11.35%.

Naturally, the lower rate looked pretty tempting.

My advice was simple: before you decide, compare what you will actually be paying each month.

She did.

The major lender’s repayment was $572.27 per month.

Our repayment was $538.62 per month.

Despite the much higher interest rate, our option was $33.65 less each month.

There can be much more to the cost of a loan than the headline interest rate, including fees and the way the loan is structured. That’s why we encourage clients to compare the whole loan, not just one number.

In this case, taking a closer look made the decision much easier.

Some of you may have noticed it's been a little quieter around SoEzy lately. A few weeks ago, we said goodbye to our beautiful Charlie and have been finding our feet without him, before we could share our sad news.
Last month we said goodbye to our beloved office dog, Charlie.
For many of our clients, Charlie was the first to welcome you through the door. If you visited the office over the past fourteen years, chances are you were greeted by a wagging tail, hopeful eyes and a gentle reminder that meetings are always better when dogs are involved.
Charlie never officially worked for SoEzy. He simply divided his time between our office and Where The Wilde Things Are, usually deciding where to spend the day based on who was most likely to share a snack!
He brought a sense of calm to busy days and reminded us that taking a few moments to chat, laugh or pat a dog was never time wasted.
The office feels very different without him.
Thank you to everyone who made a fuss of Charlie over the years. He loved every visitor and every pat.
We'll miss our gentle old mate more than words can say.
