Youth, Volunteering & Choice

There’s a lot of conversation right now about introducing mandatory volunteering for young people after Year 12.

As a young adult in community, and volunteering… I see both sides.

Volunteering can be powerful.
It builds confidence, connection, purpose, and real world skills. It can open doors, create belonging, and even change the direction of a young person’s life.

But here’s the question we need to ask…

Does making it mandatory strengthen that impact, or risk losing what makes it meaningful?

Because true volunteering comes from:
✔️ Choice
✔️ Passion
✔️ Connection
Not obligation.
Young people today are already navigating so much, study, work, mental health, uncertainty about the future.

For some, adding a requirement may feel like pressure, not opportunity.

So maybe the conversation isn’t just about mandating volunteering…

Maybe it’s about:
Making opportunities more accessible.
Creating safe, inclusive spaces to belong,
Valuing lived experience.

Supporting youth to want to contribute, not feel forced to.

Let’s invest in building a culture where young people are inspired and supported to step forward, not required to.

Because when young people choose to give back… the impact is real, lasting, and powerful.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, especially from young people, parents, and volunteers.

Heads up, SA 📢 E-scooter laws changed in July 2025, but plenty of people are still not following the rules.

Whether you're on a scooter, on foot, or on four wheels, the rules affect everyone sharing our paths and roads.

Send this post to your friends and family to make sure they’re across the rules. Let’s keep SA safe!

We’re asking the 13-15 year olds in your life how they’ve been affected by the under-16s social media ban - and what they think could be done better.

Their feedback will help us understand what’s working, what’s not, and how we can better advocate for children and young people into the future.

Access the survey via www.surveymonkey.com/r/CCYPSocialBan and tell us how the ban has affected them - or if it hasn’t - and what could be improved.
