Now seems like a good time to reflect on my big life change. Previously a mechanical engineer it was more than just a sideways shift when I decided to become a mortgage broker. It has been two years since I made the leap, and I'm proud of what I have accomplished.
Whilst I was a mechanical engineer, I had developed a few important skills for that job; technical analytics, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail. As it turns out, these skills have been incredibly valuable to me in my new career as a broker. The journey to solve each problem is vastly different, but the basic skills are just the same.
Training for this life change was not an easy process, and it required a lot of hard work, formal education in the shape of a diploma and generally feeling like everyday was a school day for the first 6 months! Such a major life change has turned out to be quite reinvigorating though, and I thank David of course for his patience as my brand new colleague, and for taking the chance on me when he gave me the opportunity to grown in this profession. Having such an experienced broker to learn the ropes from has been worth a thousand diplomas in finance.
A fresh challenge is good for the soul, and hopefully my story proves that if you want it enough, anyone can persue a leap like this. Of course I'm thankful to have had the people around me to support me when I needed it, and that is probably the most important part of this story. At the end of the day though, if you become weary of the comfort zone you find yourself in, maybe it's time to look outside. You never know what you'll find.
This brings me to my last personal lesson. As it turns out (really this should have been obvious to me) when you do a good job for people they really appreciate it. Helping people make their own life change, be it buying their first home, getting on top of spiralling finances, investing for their future or one of the countless other journeys we go on with customers as mortgage brokers, supporting our customers makes this job very rewarding indeed.
