There’s been a lot of concern from some people about the Government’s proposed changes to superannuation this week.

The first thing that’s really important about this is that at this stage it’s only a proposal, and it’s two years away from being implemented, so there’s no need to panic.

You can hear our thoughts about it here, but if you’d like to talk to us about how it might specifically impact you, we’re here to help.

Have a great weekend,

Dave

There’s an ongoing debate in financial markets about the best investment strategy, and performance numbers are always quoted in the press.

One study conducted by Standard & Poor has been looking at investment returns and comparing them to the long term return of investment markets for 20 years, and they recently released their latest report.

It makes for interesting reading, and we examine their findings here below.

Have a great weekend,

What does short term performance mean in the context of investment decisions?

Ultimately, not very much. Our bad decisions can look good, and our good decisions can look bad in the short term.

So how do we assess our decision making and how do we make better decisions? We talk more about this topic here below:

Finally, some good news on the inflation front coming out of the US on Thursday night. As a result of this we’ve seen a solid bounce back in markets.

So what do we see happening from here (bearing in mind my crystal ball smashed years ago)? You can see here.

More interest rate rises this week, more volatility in markets. Until we get some certainty about where interest rates are going to peak we might continue to be stuck in this cycle.

One of the responses I receive from people when we talk about what their hopes for future is that they would like to have choices. They don’t want to be worried about money, and they’d like to have the freedom and the flexibility to choose to do things without having to worry about money.

But there is a factor that will have a significant impact on the choices people are able to make in the future that I realised we’ve not been talking about enough in our meetings with clients. This was brought to the fore in discussions I had with two men this week, and I realised we need to spend more time talking about this factor. You can listen to more about this here.

Have a great weekend,

This week was a big week in terms of financial news with the handing down of the Federal Budget.

While there weren’t any major changes announced there are a number of opportunities for our clients to take advantage of. We provide an overview here.

What do the British Prime Minister and a redundancy offer have in common?

No, it’s not a joke at the expense of Liz Truss, but it there are parallels between events in the UK and something that happened to one of our clients this week (albeit with a much more positive outcome).

You can find out more here.

I’ve been looking backwards recently, trying to makes sense of the current economic environment by identifying historical parallels. One period that looks to have many similarities are the 1980s, and particularly the early part of the decade. What’s interesting too is how investment markets fared throughout this period. We talk more about these two periods here:

Have a great weekend.

Markets were a lot more positive this week - whether that will last I don’t know.

However, something happened this week that crystallised for me what one of my biggest fears is, and one that many others also worry about. I talk about it here, and how I’m tackling it.

Have a great weekend.

It was always going to take something big to knock Mad Vlad off the front page of the paper for a few days, and the Optus data breach certainly did that.

We’ve had a few questions about what people should be doing to protect themselves and their assets as a result of this, and so this week we take you through 4 quick and easy things you can do to beef up your security. You can watch here:

Have a great long weekend (if you’re in NSW), or just a great weekend everywhere else.
