There’s been a lot of discussion following the Federal Budget announcement, particularly around negative gearing and what changes may or may not apply moving forward.

One important clarification we’ve received from one of our lenders is this:

If a property was purchased before 12 May 2026 as an owner occupied home, and later becomes an investment property, negative gearing may still apply to the original debt used to purchase the property.

As always, every situation is different and the detail matters.
