SE QLD friends, the next few days will be a first for many. Please stay safe and follow the advice of authorities.
Here are some tips that may make your life easier in the aftermath of what’s coming our way with Cyclone Alfred. Severe winds, heavy rain and storm surge on the way. There will no doubt be some damage caused.
INSURANCE TIPS:
- First and foremost stay safe and follow the advice of authorities. Don’t put yourself in harms way to protect your property. Secure it now, before the cyclone crosses the coast.
- Keep your insurance policy and receipts handy. Make yourself aware of your coverage and exclusions on your policy.
- If you are insured directly, and not via a broker, you will need to handle the claim on your own. Happy to help guide you here though.
- If you are insured via a broker, lean on them to assist you in preparing your claim.
- It may be too late now to obtain cover or endorse an existing policy. There would be embargos on all postcodes affected by Cyclone Alfred.
- We have provided the number below of a hotline you can call @ Johns Lyng Group for urgent repairs. They are a great first point of contact (particularly for our clients via Cursio Group / McLardy McShane / Steadfast). Not all insurers may allow you to use them. Check with your insurer for approved builders.
- Take lots of photos and videos before and after the event to support your claim.
- Ask your insurer to confirm your excess. For small claims, it may not be worth claiming.
- Insurers will charge an excess for each and every claim. Check with your insurer how claims under different sections are treated regarding excess/s to pay.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
- Bring in your outdoor furniture and put away / tie down loose items.
- Create clear pathways for water to flow past your property.
- Use sandbags to prevent water entering door ways.
- Lift up any expensive, electrical, and other, items off the floor, in case water does make its way in.
- Don’t use pool pumps until later as wildlife may have made its way into your pool plumbing.
- If your property does become damaged the safest place to be is inside the home.
Stay safe everyone!
