The Tasmanian Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub – known as the TAS Farm Innovation Hub – is one of eight established across Australia by the Australian Government's Future Drought Fund. As our climate changes and becomes more variable, we need to build climate resilience into communities, economies and environments at all scales. The hub helps Tasmanian farmers, and those who support them, to build valuable relationships and access critical information. Through the hub, people and organisations in the agriculture industry build knowledge to drive innovation in their businesses, care for land and waterways, and enhance community wellbeing. Diverse partners and network supporters across a spectrum of values, expertise and experience are working together to increase farmers’ access to knowledge and adoption of practices that ensure financial, social and environmental resilience to climate change and variability. The hub also seeks to enhance community wellbeing to mitigate the increasing risk of drought and other extreme climatic events.

Looking for ways to make the most of your on-farm water management?

We’ve been working with the team at Pinion Advisory to bring these tours to farmers across Northern Tasmania. It’s a great opportunity to hear from other producers, learn from their experiences and pick up practical ideas you can put to use on your own farm.

There are two tours to choose from, depending on what you’d like to learn more about:

🐄 Maximising Efficiency Tour – Visit three livestock producers and hear how they’ve designed and run their systems to get the best results.

💧 Planning for Water Development Tour – Learn more about dam construction, stock water and getting your irrigation plans right from the start.

Calling all new and emerging farmer groups, this one is for you!

Next Tuesday afternoon, the team from RMCG will be running a workshop through the Emerge Program, funded by us at the TAS Farm Innovation Hub, to share tips and tricks for planning, preparing and delivering an engaging event.

This free workshop will give you practical tools you can put to use straight away, including an event planning process for field days, workshops, meetings and other group activities, tips for planning for the ‘what ifs’, handy checklists and ideas to help you plan your next event.

Last Friday, Marek from Ag Logic hosted our monthly Seasonal Update webinar, looking at the start of the irrigation season and why spring is an important time to set up for summer.

After a warmer-than-usual winter, conditions are looking a little different across the state. May was the warmest on record, and the rest of winter wasn’t far behind.

With moderate rainfall, most paddocks have avoided waterlogging, and pasture has continued to grow. But plants are now drawing moisture at rates we’d normally expect to see in November.

North of Longford, spring rain will be important to carry conditions into summer, while further south, rainfall is needed to maintain spring growth.

A couple of weeks ago, we had the pleasure of hosting Mick Veitch, AgriFutures Australia Chair, at our Industry Advisory Board meeting.

As part of his visit, we headed out on the road to Hagley Farm School for a tour and a chance to show him some of the projects we’re supporting.

The following day, we headed north-west to Forthside Farm, where a number of research trials and teaching programs are helping contribute to the sustainability and productivity of Tasmania’s agriculture industry.

It was a great couple of days, and we’re grateful to Mick for making the trip and taking the time to see some of the work happening across Northern Tasmania.

Welcome to the team, Lyndal! 👋

Lyndal has recently joined the team as our Senior Extension Officer.

With a background in dairy farming herself, Lyndal knows first-hand that every farm and every region is different. She’s also worked across government, industry and regional development, giving her a great understanding of the opportunities, challenges and realities that come with working in agriculture.

You’ll see Lyndal out and about (if you haven’t already!), getting to know farmers, industry and regional communities, listening to what’s happening on the ground and working with people to turn good ideas into something that actually makes a difference.

Good farmer groups don’t just happen. They take people who are willing to get involved, share the load and keep things moving.

But we know that’s not always easy.

Sometimes it’s the same few people doing the organising. Meetings can lose their spark. Getting new people to step up can be a challenge. And sometimes you’re just not sure what to do next.

That’s where The Glue comes in.

This practical, in-person workshop, led by the team from RMCG, is for farmers and the people who support farmer groups, where you’ll pick up practical tools and ideas you can take straight back to your group.
