Knowledge is just knowing stuff. That's easy.

"Wisdom however isn't just being clever, it's much more. It's a combination of experience, knowledge and good judgement.

Develop your intuition so you get a feel for situations and people. For some, it's a gut feeling and others it's a heart feeling. Use your wisdom to assess how you can develop good judgement".

Today is December 1st and that means Movember is over for another year.

But the need for Movember continues today, next week, next month and every month through to Movember 2026 and beyond.

- Last year the dollar value of mental health related insurance payments was double that of 5 years ago.
- Over the last decade the number of mental health related claims for the 30-39 age group rose by a staggering 730%
(Stats are for TPD, male & female, provided by Council of Australian Life Insurers)

Personally, it's been a massive couple of weeks. A fortnight ago I passed a final exam to be qualified with the Tax Practitioners Board to give tax advice and then a couple of days later assisting Carlos Duque with Mo Miles, raising nearly $20,000, awareness and lots of positive energy for Movember.

Last Friday I was at Kosciuszko crewing for Simon Davidson as he ran 100klms through the mountains (he finished in the top 30 out of 1,000+ competitors and only 14mths after completing chemotherapy πŸ‘). The next day I was back in Newcastle, on stage at Town Hall & speaking about mental health. This was at the launch of a documentary about one mans run from Newcastle to Sydney and return to support the Black Dog Institute.

I don't want to give the impression I'm qualified to advise on mental health - I'm definitely not. But it is something I have some experience, passion and thoughts on. So as we finish up Movember 2025 I'd like to share a few things please.

Mental health can involve needing medication, various types of counselling, hospitalisation. It can mean feeling anything from being a little bit down, isolated, crying, helpless, completely overwhelmed, suicidal thoughts. It can be impacting the happiest, most positive person you know because they've become an expert at putting up a facade.

Mental health needs more empathy. Not sympathy or pity and definitely not apathy, indifference or mocking.

If someone is talking to you about mental health issues:
1. Listen without advice - unsolicited advice that is. Avoid telling them what they should do.
2. Listen without judgement - focus on understanding, not evaluating. You may not feel as you're judging, but the other person may feel like they're being judged.
3. Listen with intent - give your full attention, eye contact, no distractions, listen for clues to see if they are reaching out for help.
4. Listen with vulnerability - share your own experiences when appropriate to help them feel less alone.

BNI is a business networking group. Some suggest it's like a cult, some think it's too strict with rules, too pushy, too sales-ish with targets.

CULT make up the first 4 letters of CULTURE.

Like almost any successful business or sporting team, the right people create the right culture. The right culture leads to happy people. A happy team leads to success.
Our particular chapter of BNI doesn't look to recruit people that might bring lots of money. We want to bring in people that have the right culture.

We have a member that's recently needed to step aside for personal reasons. This member also runs a NOT For Profit called Malipai.
Malipai organises and pays for children/young adults in The Phillipines to go to University. These young adults then get real jobs and are able to support their families and villages.

Last Sunday our BNI Chapter organised a concert & fundraising afternoon. A lot of people put in a lot of work, gave their time, donated prizes, the band donated their time. The afternoon raised over $12,000.

That money won't just get Carl & Rechie in to University. It will pay for the entire 4 years at Uni. Carl is now studying Bachelor of Business, majoring in Financial Management and Rechie is going to become a teacher.

Our BNI Chapter doing this is something I'm proud to be a part of.

This morning was the Regional Awards for BNI, the business networking organisation I'm a part of.

The chapter I've been a member of for 4yrs is Thrive and this morning was a great reward for the support we showed each other in 2024.

As a group, Thrive won 2024 Highest Chapter Retention, Highest Net Growth and Most Improved Chapter.
Individually, I was proud to walk away with awards for Overall Outstanding Performance, Outstanding Visitor Contribution and Master Connector.

If you're even slightly curious about why the 34 business brains and great people in the photo below want to help each others business grow and how we do it so well, just hit me up and we can organise a chat

A couple of weeks ago a clients wife gave birth to their second child.
A couple of days ago the same clients wife received $774,700.38 from his life insurance claim.

Planning for something that might go wrong isn't as exciting as retirement planning or planning a holiday.
It won't replace the emptiness this Christmas.

But the below text does mean his widow can enter 2025 knowing the mortgage is gone and she can devote all of her time and energy to herself and her beautiful kids.

This isn't an article about insurance but it definitely demonstrates the value of insurance.

Richard's journey took him from earning $300,000/year to a diagnosis of prostate cancer that kept him away from his business, ultimately losing his business, now relying on Foodbank for free and discounted groceries and they're looking at selling their property.

A good insurance advisor, income protection and some sort of keyperson coverage wouldn't have saved Richard from getting cancer. But it would have saved him and his family from losing their way of life.

Nearly half of low-income households in Australia are experiencing food insecurity, according to food relief charity Foodbank. Regional and single-parent families are more at risk.

An interesting article here.

On the positive, there are some very good financial advisors and genuine financial coaches that are also excellent at creating educational content. But on the negative, there are wannabe influencers (qualified and not qualified) that are maybe more motivated by likes and followers.

By all means, listen to financial advice on socials. But are they just fear mongering & criticising or also giving you solutions? Do you own research on what you've been told. If you're unsure about something ask questions.

Experts warn that the rise of "finfluencers" β€” or financial influencers β€” could negatively impact how young people interact with money.
