Canary-yellow crops, costly inputs and a surprising solution — what’s really going on with iron deficiency in pulses?

In this episode, SARDI Senior Research Scientist Dr Nigel Wilhelm and Nutrien agronomist Olivia Veronese discuss one of the Limestone Coast’s most frustrating crop nutrition challenges: iron deficiency in pulses grown on highly calcareous soils.

From decades of trial and error to some exciting recent breakthroughs, Nigel and Olivia unpack why faba and broad beans can turn bright yellow, how new iron treatments are changing the game, and what researchers are doing to make those treatments more affordable for growers.

A strong El Niño is underway, but other climate influences continue to impact rainfall and temperature across Australia

17/09/2026

What's the rest of the season going to look like with the El Nino developing?

Nutrien's Principal Atmospheric Scientist Eric Snodgrass shares the latest analysis in his Ag Weather Forecast for Australia 👉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLUN7tTh9ek

☀️ Winter wet in the interior but dry along the east and southeast coasts.

☀️ Mostly dry across the key growing districts through about 23 September, then a front brings a rain chance to WA and the east coast.

☀️ Out to mid-October the new analogue system keeps the interior drier than normal, coasts near normal to wetter, mild south and cooler north.

☀️ The MJO is sliding into phase 1, which in October favours a mild, dry interior.

☀️ Strong El Niños bring a drier spring to the southern basin and South Australia 60–80% of the time, but tilt Queensland and NSW wetter and leave WA a mixed signal.

☀️ Three long-range models agree with each other but not with history, showing no dry bias in South Australia and a wetter interior by summer.
