Taking a deposit from a customer is a liability as it's the promise to provide goods and/or services in the future. It must be reported on your balance sheet first, as a liability until you have fulfilled the terms of the sale. Once the customer is satisfied and pays in full, the value of the deposit should be taken from the liability account and added to the revenue account on your profit & loss statement, reflecting the decrease in liability and the increase in revenue.
