Over the last few months whilst I’ve been recovering from my surgery, I’ve managed to get out once a week and travel to the Royal Talbot rehabilitation centre in Kew to do Peer support & mentoring work with new spinal patients.
I’ve faced a lot challenges and have progressed a lot on my own but to be able to share my living experience is a huge part of my life, whether I want it to be or not and I’m finding it incredibly rewarding.
A major part of this work is helping others who are dealing with the same hurdles: To inform, To educate and To explain the facts that recovering from a spinal cord injury is not a quick or easy process.
It’s a sad fact that not every patient is eligible to any Care Funding. I was so grateful that through a client of one of my Fijian brothers, I was able to donate a powered wheelchair to the rehab spinal gym which has helped out this lovely gentleman so that he can still enjoy his independence with his family and his grandchildren when he’s back at home.
To be honest this life is tough, and things don’t always work out well. Not just for the patient but also the medical staff and their mental wellbeing throughout the tireless work that they dedicate their lives to every single shift.
To be able to do this work and give it back to our spinal community is something I’m grateful for everyday.
