What does it look like when boatbuilding turns into a pathway to a whole new future?

We spent the day with the Wright of Passage program yesterday, a Making Waves Foundation initiative Club Marine has been proud to back.

The program supports disadvantaged, at-risk and disengaged young people aged 15 to 18.

Teenagers team up with volunteer mentors, working side by side to build their own sailing dinghy from the hull up.

Some anglers chase one great catch. Indy Thompson has spent her life chasing all of them, then written the guide for the rest of us.

She’s a competitive angler, a marine scientist, and author of ‘Ultimate Fishing: Australia’, a guide to 40 of the country's best fishing spots.

"Fishing is the highest participated sport in Australia," she says, "and so it should be."

The Boat Works Gold Coast isn't your average boatyard.

Spanning 55 acres, it's home to six haul-out machines capable of lifting everything from trailerboats to 300 tonne superyachts, plus over 100 onsite businesses covering the complete A–Z of trades and services, including a fully stocked marine chandlery megastore.

And it's not all boats. Ever seen a boatyard with its own car museum, three restaurants, accommodation and resort-style amenities?

Tie up for the day at Sanctuary Cove Marina on the Gold Coast, and you get a lot more than a berth.

Complimentary day berthing means you can step ashore for lunch, browse the shops, play a round on one of two championship golf courses, or relax by the lagoon pool at the InterContinental Sanctuary Cove Resort.

With 481 berths and a 5 Gold Anchor Platinum accreditation, it's one of the top-rated marinas in the country, catering to everything from jetskis to superyachts.

This is the future of marine tourism and commercial vessel operations on the Brisbane River and Moreton Bay.

Colmslie Wharves, under construction at Morningside, will offer 50 secure, purpose-built berths for vessels from 12m to 50m, giving charter operators, water taxis and tourism businesses a proper home just 9km from the CBD.

It's designed to keep vessels working rather than shuttling between facilities.

Al McGlashan and Audi Croft recently headed out squidding around Port Phillip, with their regular fishing companion Mahi along for the ride.

Turns out a good day on the water is even better with a four-legged first mate keeping watch.

Would your dog make the cut as a fishing deckhand?
