With the boating season officially kicking off today, now’s the time to make sure your safety checks are in order before heading out on the water.

Marine Rescue NSW is reminding boaters that a few simple steps before launching can help prevent a great day out from turning into an emergency. Check your engine, battery, fuel, safety equipment and the weather before you go.

It only takes a few minutes, and if something does go wrong, volunteer rescue teams are ready to respond.

Perth doesn't get enough credit for just how good the boating is right on its doorstep.

The Swan River alone has herring and mulloway biting around Canning Bridge, while Rottnest is worth the run out for Parker Point's snorkelling, just be back before the afternoon swell builds.

If you'd rather keep it easy, Mandurah and the Peel Inlet suit newer skippers, and Rockingham's Shoalwater Islands come with seals, dolphins and little penguins along the way.

A dirty hull could be costing you more at the pump than you think.

Marine growth can increase fuel use by up to 30%, but there are a few other easy wins too. Ease off the throttle instead of running wide open, aim for that efficient mid-range cruising speed rather than idling in the in-between zone, and time your trips to avoid fighting currents or headwinds.

None of these are big changes, but together they mean more time on the water out of the same tank of fuel.

Kids don't care how big the fish is, they just want the thrill of catching something. With the school holidays just around the corner, it's the perfect excuse to get them out on the water.

A few tips for a fishing trip the whole family will actually enjoy:
- Keep the gear simple, a basic rod and reel combo is all you need
- Pick a comfortable day rather than chasing perfect conditions
- Let the kids bait the hook and reel it in themselves, with an adult on hand to help
- Target easy catches like yakkas, mullet or herring on small hooks

Ever wondered how a yacht club stays strong for over a century?

It takes a community of passionate members, volunteers, supporters and partners all playing their part. We're proud to have been part of that community at Sandringham Yacht Club for more than 30 years.

Today, we're the major sponsor of the SYC clubhouse, naming rights sponsor of the SYC Boating Academy, and supporting sponsor of the J/70 sailing program's six boats.
