The Reserve Bank of Australia has increased the cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60 per cent. The decision, announced today, reflects continued concerns around elevated inflation and a number of emerging upside risks.
The RBA highlighted higher global energy prices, ongoing cost pressures for businesses, stronger-than-expected recent inflation outcomes and continued pressure on domestic economic capacity. While economic growth has slowed and consumer spending is easing, the Board considers that inflation remains too high. The latest increase is intended to further tighten financial conditions and support a return of inflation to target.
The RBA also noted ongoing uncertainty around the economic outlook, including the impact of the conflict in the Middle East, global energy supply disruptions, weak productivity growth and conditions in the housing market.
We will continue to monitor developments and what they may mean for Australian households, businesses, and the broader economy.
