Having multiple super funds can mean multiple sets of fees, duplicate insurance premiums and a less organised view of your retirement savings.

So consolidating your old super accounts can make sense.

But there’s an important catch.

Before rolling everything into one fund, you need to understand what insurance is attached to your existing accounts.

Some super funds automatically include insurance such as income protection or other cover. If you cancel an old fund, you could also cancel that insurance.

And getting new cover isn’t always guaranteed.

Here's a simple way to think about investing. Say you've got $50k to invest, that's your water. But water alone doesn't grow a tree.

You've still got to choose the field, what to plant, what time of year to plant it. The decisions are almost endless, and it's exactly the same with investing. Just because you've got the money doesn't mean it's automatically going to grow the way you want it to.

So do you go in guessing, or do you talk to someone who actually knows the field, a farmer, a gardener, in investing terms, an adviser? Someone who can help you figure out what you're actually trying to grow, and the best conditions to grow it in.

Investing's a genuinely huge, increasingly complicated space, with new products constantly coming onto the market. Having water isn't the hard part, knowing what to do with it is.

The temptation when you're not sure what to do is to just leave your money sitting there. But here's the biggest mistake we actually see, and it's not what you'd expect.

Sure, sometimes people put money into genuinely risky, unnecessary assets. But far more common is analysis paralysis. It takes so long to save meaningful money in this environment, cost of living, everything working against you, and by the time you've finally got something saved, you freeze. A year goes by, two years, five years, and you've done absolutely nothing with it.

An imperfect action beats a perfect inaction, every time. Doing nothing is genuinely the worst option on the table.

90% of people think about investing the wrong way around. Gold's doing well, should I put money there? Property's had a bit of a run, is this the moment? Someone's tipped a stock before its IPO, should I jump in?

Here's the thing though, that's a secondary consideration, and it's honestly not even close.

The most important thing isn't the investment itself, it's understanding your own circumstances and your actual capacity to do something. That's what should be driving the decision, not the shiny opportunity that sounds exciting because someone said it's undervalued or about to take off.
