A Rich History

Ambition is built into Rialto’s bones. Commissioned by Patrick McCaughan, an entrepreneur capitalising on Melbourne’s land boom of the 1880s, the original Venetian Gothic-style Rialto building was finished in 1891. Fast-forward almost 100 years Rialto opened its doors in 1986 after a four-year construction. Signalling an engineering triumph as Australia’s then-tallest building, Rialto redefined the skyline, becoming a beacon of business excellence and ambition. Today, Rialto—the product of a joint venture by Grollo Group and St Martins Properties—is a testament to the courage, conviction and vision of its owners, who have owned and operated the iconic building from the very beginning.
