New data from our partners at Beyond Blue reinforces what many in our sector are seeing every day: financial pressure is the leading external stressor affecting Australians’ relationships, with many people experiencing strain on the connections they rely on most for their mental health.

Financial pressure was the biggest external stressor affecting mental health for nearly half of Australians (47%), reinforcing that the role financial counsellors play is critical in helping people get back on track.

New Beyond Blue data shows financial pressure is the leading external stressor affecting Australians’ relationships, with many people experiencing strain on the connections they rely on most for their mental health.

Financial counsellors frequently see the devastating harm scams are causing.

Dr Domenique Meyrick, CEO of Financial Counselling Australia, said in a joint statement with Consumer Action Law Centre that delays to the Scam Prevention Framework mean more Australians will remain exposed to increasingly sophisticated scams, with "too many left carrying the financial and emotional burden when protections fail."

“The focus must now be on strong obligations on industry and fast, fair access to redress for people affected by scams," she said.

Coming together over shared stories, learning and a few delicious bush food creations 🌿
This morning our team marked National Reconciliation Week with a special morning tea inspired by this year’s theme, All In.

From lemon myrtle treats to meaningful conversations, it was a chance to reflect, connect and deepen our understanding of First Nations cultures and knowledge.

Reconciliation is everyone’s responsibility, and moments like these remind us that even small actions can help build stronger, more respectful relationships.

Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week, a time to reflect on our shared history and the role we each play in advancing reconciliation.

This year’s theme, All In, is a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every day. It reminds us that reconciliation is not a spectator sport, and that lasting change requires all of us to step forward and take action.

For our sector, being all in means continuing to listen, learn and act. It means strengthening culturally safe and accessible financial counselling services for First Nations people and communities, and working to address systemic barriers and inequities.

We acknowledge the leadership, knowledge and resilience of First Nations peoples, and the importance of truth-telling in shaping a more just future.

We are committed to action, and to walking alongside the financial counselling sector to help turn commitment into meaningful, lasting change.

Today, on National Sorry Day, we acknowledge the strength, resilience and lived experiences of Stolen Generations survivors and their families.

National Sorry Day invites all Australians to learn about and recognise the truth of the forced removal of First Nations children from their families, communities and Country, and the ongoing impacts that continue today.

As Reconciliation Australia reminds us, saying sorry matters. It acknowledges truth and signals compassion. But sorry without action is not enough.

This year’s theme, From Sorry to Action, calls on all of us to move beyond acknowledgement and towards meaningful, lasting change.

At FCA, we are committed to action. This includes listening to First Nations voices, supporting healing, and advocating for the commitments that remain unfinished.

We encourage our community to reflect, learn and engage with the stories shared by The Healing Foundation in this video.
