Money worries are weighing on Australians’ mental health. 💙

Beyond Blue’s new Australia’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Check 2026 shows financial pressure is the number one personal cause of distress, affecting 46% of adults. Nearly half (47%) say cost-of-living pressures are hurting their mental health, up from 37% in 2022. For people aged 25 to 34, it’s 62%.

Money stress and mental health are closely linked, and help is available.

A national evaluation of financial counselling in prisons has landed — and the results are clear. Across 21 correctional facilities and community corrections sites, financial counsellors helped 2,877 people resolve debt, restore banking access and get identification sorted before release. 87% said it eased their financial stress, and every single service provider had to turn people away because demand outstripped what they could deliver.
Unresolved debt is one of the drivers of reoffending. This program tackled it directly — and it worked.
The funding runs out this year, and no ongoing investment has been secured for most of these services. Without it, financial counsellors will be withdrawn from the prisons where they've built trust and helped thousands of people leave custody in a stronger position to stay out for good.
