Brand new bike, straight out of the box. Before that first ride, it’s worth five minutes in the driveway. 🚴🏼🛠️

Most components have their torque printed right on them, like the 6Nm on this stem. Set the wrench to that number, tighten until it clicks and you’re done. Check the stem and the axles and you know everything’s sitting exactly where it should. Tight enough to stay put, not so tight you damage the parts, especially on carbon.

Save this for your next new bike day, and send it to the mate who’s about to pick one up 🚲

You don't need a backpack to ride prepared. A small saddle bag and the right three things will get you out of most trouble on the road.

Water first, because hydration is key and the bottle rides strapped to the outside so the bag stays free. Then a pump that works on Presta and Schrader valves, so you can sort out your own flat or your mate's. And a toolkit that covers everything from a quick adjustment to a tyre change. The levers hook onto the spoke so both hands stay free, and the ratchet handles the small fixes.

Clocks went forward this morning, so the after work ride just got its light back. This is the kit we'd pull out for it.

The Gold Series jersey has textured mesh sleeves so air keeps moving when the pace lifts and the bibs match it with the gold wordmark running down the leg. The carbon fibre pattern sunnies cut the glare on those late sunsets. The shoes close with dual dials, so you can fine tune the fit without stopping to redo anything.

There's no best cycling shoe. There's only the right one for how you actually ride.

The CR5 has a carbon sole, so it's the stiffest of the four. Everything you put into the pedal goes into the pedal. That matters when you're racing or training hard, and it's overkill if you're not.

The NR3 nylon sits a step down in stiffness and a step up in comfort. Firm without the harshness, which is why it suits long rides and most riding in between.

The NR3 flat pedal version is for anyone who hasn't clipped in yet, or has no interest in it. Proper grip, no cleats, no learning curve.

The CR4 is the easiest to live with. Walkable, comfortable, and a sensible place to start if you're new to it.

Where do you ride when it's dark? Most bike lights are made for one bike. This one isn't.

The M5 runs 1000 lumens with a 200 metre beam, so whether you're commuting through the city or out where there's no street lighting at all, you're actually seeing what's ahead rather than guessing.

The mount is the part worth knowing about. It's an adjustable strap that fits round any handlebar, so it moves between your road bike, your commuter and anything else in the shed. Above the bars, below the bars, whatever works for your setup.

It also has a light sensor built in, so it switches itself on when it gets dark and off when it doesn't need to be running. Up to 25 hours of battery depending on the mode, and USB C charging.

The Gold Series jersey is cut slim and race fit, with honeycomb sleeves that move air through on the warmer rides and a body light enough that you stop noticing it. The gold detailing is deliberately restrained. It looks like a proper kit without announcing itself.

Spring's here and the early starts are back. Worth having something you actually want to put on.

Most of the time you spend getting ready to ride shouldn't be spent on the roof of your car. 🚗🚴🏼

This one is ready in seconds 🕕. Place it on the roof, press the button, and the pump seals it. No crossbars, no drilling, nothing permanent attached to the car.

It's also smart 🤓. A sensor sits in the console and monitors pressure the whole time you're driving. If it detects a drop, it alerts you and corrects itself automatically. That's the part that actually matters on a long drive.

And it holds three bikes of any type. The multiple attachments mean you're not limited to one style of frame. Last time we had a commuter, a folding bike and a gravel bike all on the same rack.
