🇬🇧 JADE NEWS: UK scraps rich foreign investor visa scheme 🇬🇧

Visas offering foreign investors fast-track residency in the UK are being scrapped with immediate effect, the home secretary has confirmed.

Priti Patel said ending Tier 1 investor visas, for those spending at least £2m, was the start of a "renewed crackdown on illicit finance and fraud".

The program was introduced in 2008 to encourage wealthy people from outside the EU to invest in the UK.

It has been under review for some time, after concerns it is open to abuse.

It was expected that the government would announce scrapping the golden visas next week, but the move has been brought forward amid pressure on ministers to cut UK ties to Russia over the threat of invasion to Ukraine.

The Home Office has issued 2,581 investor visas to Russian citizens since the scheme was introduced in 2008.

Several changes have been made since the investor visa scheme was launched, including extra checks on how and when applicants acquired their wealth.

Banks are also now required to complete certain checks before opening accounts for applicants - who are also required to submit extra paperwork if their qualifying funds are invested through a chain of different companies.

Farmers hope to start new year with agriculture visa workers, but there are stumbling blocks

For the better part of last year, the federal government has been talking up its new visa, designed to bring in overseas workers to help fix labour shortages within Australian agriculture.

According to Agriculture Minister David Littleproud, the ag visa “came into effect” on October 1 following amendments to migration regulations.

However, three months on, no overseas workers have arrived under the new scheme.

Mr Littleproud said it was now a matter for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

“All we’re waiting on now are the bilateral [agreements] with a number of South-East Asian countries that [Foreign Affairs Minister] Marise Payne is negotiating,” he told Sky News.

“We’re hoping and we’re very confident that very soon she’ll finalize those bilaterals.

“But you have to appreciate that these countries have to agree to it. Just because Australia arrogantly puts out an ag visa, doesn’t mean everyone signs up to it.”

Northern Territory Farmers Association chief executive Paul Burke said: “The NT has put its hand up to be the pilot program for this visa, like we were for the restart of the seasonal worker program.”

NT Cattlemen’s Association chief executive Will Evans said he was “cautiously optimistic” the visa would deliver results in 2022.

Covid-19 border restrictions in QLD, VIC, NSW and SA

Quarantine has been scrapped for fully vaccinated international travellers entering Queensland.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced today fully vaccinated international travellers will be allowed into Queensland from 1am on Saturday January 22 without having to quarantine.

Ms Palaszczuk said vaccinated international travellers will just need to do a rapid antigen test within 24 hours of their arrival.

Victoria, NSW have similar rules for vaccinated travellers.

SA requires fully vaccinated travellers to undertake a COVID-19 PCR test within 24 hours of arrival in SA and quarantine until test returns negative results. In addition, SA requires fully vaccinated travellers to not travel into high risk settings for 7 days after arrival.

High risk settings include hospitals, residential aged care facility, disability care facility.

On Thursday 25 November 2021, The Australian government announced that it will be introducing rules that will improve access to permanent residence under the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa program for:

Existing Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa holders in the short-term stream
Legacy Temporary Work Skilled (subclass 457) visa holders who no longer meet the age requirement.
Currently, these visa holders have no pathway to permanent residence.
The Government will also extend visas for skilled regional (provisional visa) holders (subclass 489, 491 and 494) in recognition that this cohort has been adversely affected by COVID-19 related travel restrictions.
